Thanks for the tips @Ice-man, especially the guitar pick. Agreed on the no cup removal. No need to remove the pads either.

My serial number is 848, and I did not need to use a hair dryer. Very slow, deliberate peeling was fine. One side's fabric came up easier than the other.

A potentially less frustrating way to clean the cups is to pull the dust cover out straight down while holding the cup in the air. A piece of tape, sticky side out, wrapped around a couple fingers cleans more effectively once the dust covers are off.

I'd also recommend having tweezers ready for stray hairs (and to lightly nudge up the resonator after insertion). The bottom of a plastic clicky-top pen worked well to push the paper down into the hole.

I don't cringe when listening to poorly recorded cymbals anymore, and that alone makes the mod worth it to me. Thanks @sorrodje!

 

Just received my 2nd pair of resonators:


As you can see, the newer pair has a white felt, instead of the brown felt used for the beta batch. Also the back is now in a slightly reflective black paper instead of the sushi paper for my first pair. However I can now see parts of the sushi inside this pair, whereas the inside of my first pair was completely white.
For me this is a perfect compromise:

• The white felt has a similar color to the white SBAF absorber mod.
• That the back of the resonator is black may not matter much for most, but this is perfect for me since combined with the other mods I am running now, putting the resonator in upside down actually yields a slightly more forward upper midrange (specifically around 3-4kHz), a balance that is more neutral and smoother to my ears. At least this was the case with my first SD resonator pair. We will see if this is still the same with this one. (I'm assuming that the difference is due to the larger baffle the driver "sees" on the inside)
• Finally, that I can see parts of the sushi paper inside my resonator probably doesn't matter. I experimented with putting a very thin, black sheet of felt in the bottom of the resonator and it didn't seem to change the performance much. Another option would be coloring the bottom black.

Here's another close-up shot of the two resonator pairs from the side. The newer pair is shorter, as one would expect.

My old pair has been inserted countless times, which is why I bought a new pair.

 

So I got really lucky with my black back?
I also like the white felt. Are all the newer ones white or does it depend?

Yup, my first pair arrived looking nearly exactly like this one.

Just as the first pair (when I received them), both measure very similarly. As you said:
