Soundmatters Moment is a decent value. It’s better than you would guess from looking at it. Beats the stuffing out of spouse’s Pill.

Why don't you check for yourself with a little test? Press the gap area and try to perceive any difference...there should be, but if you can't notice a change there's your answer.

^This. Heard them in Hong Kong a couple of weeks ago and the mids were sublime.

Isn't the outcome clinical? At least that was my impression when I had HD800.

    Question:

Is the Modi Multibit + MCTH + HD650 so special pairing to choose it over the feature-packed Eitr + Modi Multibit + Magni 3 + HD650 combo?

    Background:

I prefer neutrality, detail retrieval, clarity and good soundstage but enjoy some bass where it is needed. I listen mainly to rock and its variations (from 60s to current), pop and classical music. As this stack will be used with my PC, it should handle well gaming (not a priority though).

The stack will be fed from a shitty source (PC / NTB / Smartphone).

My previous experience with audio gear is limited - just few Sabre and AK based DAPs.

    Considered variants:

    Variant A (currently on order):
    Schiit Modi Multibit
    MCTH Amp

    Variant B:
    Schiit Eitr
    Schiit Modi Multibit
    Schiit Magni 3

    My reasoning

The real question is whether it is qood idea to swap the MCTH for an Eitr & Magni 3 combo (the prices are nearly identical). I read some high praise on the Modi Multibit + MCTH pairing with the HD650 (e.g. from Marvey) and I am more than intrigued by the MCTH's tube (never heard tube (hybrid) amp before). However, I feel the Eitr + Magni 3 is a much better value as they are packed with features that will / may come in handy (preouts for active monitors which I may get in the future, filtering the USB noise from my source, ability to run IEMs (waiting for MD+)). Well... and the pure Schiit stack would look better and has smaller footprint.

I am therefore more inclined to go for the pure Schiit stack. The only thing that can stop me is if the MCTH would pair with the HD650 considerably better than Magni 3 (also considering the benefits of Eitr), hence my question above.

    Thanks in advance.

You can always add an Eitr later when you have the cash. Depending how sensitive you are to USB noise, and how shitty your sources really are, you may never need it. (TOSLINK is another option for PC, hard to predict if this will sound better or worse than USB)

Magni 3 is pretty cheap, so you don't necessarily have to choose tube/hybrid vs solid state, you can have your cake and eat it too.

If you want neutral, you'd be better off going the Schiit Eitr -> used Bifrost Uber -> Magni 3 route.

Otherwise, the Eitr->Modi Multibit->Magni 3 route is your best bet. Though, it depends way too much on what you want from your HD650.

I have not heard it but the MCTH seems like it is going to be pretty special, and of limited availability. I would kick myself if I had the chance to get one but changed my mind.

Add Eitr later if you find yourself intolerant of USB unpleasantness.

Get the Magni 3 down the line when you feel like a different flavour.

That is what I would do.

But yeah, if neutral is what you are after the Magni 3 is possibly the better choice. But maybe you want tube goodness and do not know it yet.

For me and you probably. But we are not all after the same thing. I'm happy @Peter Apperup found what he needed.

Not sure if this post should be here or in used deals thread. I am looking for a simple DAC with two SPDIF inputs and this one has it
    http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/649377342-rega-dac/
At app $400 US semms like a good price, the unit looks to be in a good shape

Any experience here with Rega DAC? I am planning to use it with HE500, sometmes with HD800S and with Talisman T-3H amp - old but still really good.

Looking for a cool, balanced SS DAC+amp for my TH900 MK2. Running off an Essence STX II + V5i's right now. I know there's better out there. No tubes, because they get hot. My living space is not huge, and my 1080ti generates enough heat. I wanna play games and listen to music and wear clothes and not sweat all at the same time.

I love the bass on these cans. The highs were sharp at first but after I burned them in, I stopped getting irritated by it completely. Still leary of Schiit tho, because people say their gear is bright af.

Budget is whatever. Single and no kids means I can buy whatever I want.

@bengo might be able to shed some light on this model - might be the 'older one' he refers to in his bullet-point comparison post:

Paul: Thank you for pointing this out! I LOVED my FoxL V2s and the woofer. I gifted it to @CEE TEE when I moved onto the RIVA stuff but the moment is a wonderful size. I'm going to pick one up as something I can have in my bag all the time.

That is indeed the first version. The newer ones have fewer filter settings.

That said, the Rega dac is... kinda meh. Not terrible, but the Modi Multibit would be better (I'd take the slight fuzz of the Modi Multibit over the murk of the Rega any day). If you don't mind prosumer interfaces, there are a few nice units on CAM right now: Apogee Duet, Focusrite Forte, MOTU Ultralite

@Luge, have you considered the Vali 2? It's another well-regarded pairing with HD650.

@Mystic is letting go of one, I think.
