What a horrible and tragic event. If there are any French SBAF members, deepest condolences.

I hate the use of the word tragic when applied to stuff like this. It was a criminal action. A tragedy is an act of nature or chance. This wasn't that. This was an attack.

France doesn't deserve this kind of shit.

Nowhere deserves that kind of shit, but it seems to be happening more and more and the world seems powerless to stop it.

Could they not have got the guy out alive? I suppose the obvious answer to that is that the lorry might have been loaded with explosive. Salutations to the French police who had the courage to go in there at all.

This, by the way, is brand new news to me, so if I seem uninformed... it's because I am.

We're not powerless to stop it. We had it won at one point with Coalition (mostly US) soldiers in bases in the middle-east, being put in harms way, as a target, so these idiots wouldn't target civilians in their home countries. Iraqi GDP was going up. Incidents were down. Iraq was stabilized and getting stronger. A strong Iraq would have stabilized the entire region. But someone in their most infinite wisdom decided that we didn't need troops there and sent them all home, in the interests of "peace", because you know, soldiers are anti-peace, and people who had been at each others throats for hundred of years because they couldn't agree on who was the true authority of their religion would magically figure out how to peacefully co-exist if we left them alone.

Unfortunately, history and human nature has never worked liked this. We left Afghanistan to rot after we "won" there decades ago. I'm surprised we did exactly the same thing again with Iraq. Maintaining peace has always required the use Kumbaya AND arms. Kumbaya alone doesn't do it. Or in this case, it's not even Kumbaya, it's more like "f**k it, not my problem, I didn't start it." Covering eyes and plugging ears is not an effective means of nation building for region that sorely needed it.

Seeing those photos saddens me immensely and also pisses me off. This is so shocking that I have no more words. Locking thread in case I end up saying more stupid shit.
