I think Kingwa @ Audio-gd also does good Sabre based dacs. Although don't believe Kingwa when he say he is running out of PCM1704UK or any other of his B$ stories like "LAST MONTH", "HURRY BUY NOW".

    Cryo-treated and directional, too.

Wait, no-one told him he had to enjoy music too.. talk about moving the goalposts. Totally unfair.

I can't consider these old-school multi-bit DACs simply because they can't do DSD. After hearing a native DSD recording from Channel Classics, it's hard to face not being able to listen to sound that real again. Maybe I'll go with a multi-DAC setup...but I'm also spoiled from the quality improvement gained with HQPlayer bit-streaming through I2S.

As to what kind of music I listen to...I don't emotionally idetnify with a specific genre, and I don't try to identify with lyrics, etc, like a standard non-audiophile would. I collect anything that makes me feel good. Jazz and some genres of classics mainly, but very important contributions from soul and pop. I even have an urban track in there. One of my very favorite showcase albums is Grime/glitch. Except for a few albums, I don't do Rock just simply because I find so many of those albums to be just God-awful.

Convert DSD to 24/192 PCM. Anything above 24kHz is mostly noise from DSD noise-shaping. It's really the bitdepth that counts.

If you like Jazz and classics, you have no business with mid-fi digital at $799. You need should have a vinyl setup, which is true high end. Any digital, including DSD sounds fake and boring.

I am genuinely puzzled by your reply and Marvey did mention a language barrier. Your choice of the Jeff Bridges song does indicate an identification with those lyrics. Do audiophiles not emotionally engage with lyrics? Do you mean that you collect anything that sounds good? Am I wasting my time?

    Widely reported to beat Yggdrasil?

Not by anyone that's actually heard both (as opposed to graduates of MSU doing what they do best), I would wager.

And is that like the time you claimed that Ragnarok was "widely reported to be mediocre" and when challenged on it, the best you could come up with was a single link to Tyll's comments from big-sound last year (which weren't even in context)? And then you bought one anyway ...

No, Yggdrasil doesn't play DSD. That means it's only capable of playing >99.99% of the existing commercial music catalog. And that <0.01% that's available in DSD ... well, more than half of that has been through a PCM conversion stage, meaning that, at BEST, it's as good as 24/192 PCM by definition. If all the music you love is available in that format, more power to you ... I'd feel stifled with such a tiny catalog.

In perhaps the only time I will defend GUTB, many people use HQPlayer to convert their PCM music to DSD for output. So his entire catalog can be played back in DSD if he wanted. It won't be native DSD for most of it but proponents of that method don't care.

I'm kind of hoping they do, I'd like to see the warning label:

"Don't take apart our shit or add random pieces of shit to it. Your Schiit product was designed to function perfectly as it is, no extra shit is needed."

Sure ... however, unless your DAC performs better with a DSD-format input (which is certainly possible), any supposed/theoretical benefit of native DSD is lost the instant you transcode to, or from, PCM. So the PCM -> DSD path is exploiting issues in the DAC implementation rather than any inherent benefit to DSD.

For example, the latest DirectStream DACs from PS Audio convert all inputs to DSD before actual D-to-A conversion and generally sound very slightly better when fed a DSD stream (even if converted from PCM in software prior to playing) than a PCM stream. Chord DACs behave the opposite in my experience.

I've tried PCM -> DSD conversion both via HQ Player (various settings), and other methods, both blind and not, and never been able to discern a difference. I have heard differences between fully native DSD vs. PCM, though I'd be lying if I said that I could say that DSD was "better" in those cases unless the master was different. Different, sometimes, sure, but consistently better? Not for me.
