Sennheiser Massdrop HD6XX Afternoon Yak Devolved into Shitposts

Disclaimer, these are my own thoughts, I don't know anything about Sennheiser's strategy.

Even the name HD6XX is speculation, but if that is the actual name, I would assume it is a Massdrop exclusive. Despite MD being the highest selling individual vendor of AKG products last year, I doubt AKG could thrive off MD distribution alone, and I imagine the same would be true for Sennheiser.

If this is indeed a replacement for the HD600 and HD650, it may be an early access deal like Campfire Audio with the Nova. Certainly possible, but most Massdrop collaborations have been of the K7XX and TH-X00 variety ("we tweaked those headphones you love and knocked off $XXX from the retail price"), so I'm inclined to believe it's going to be along those lines instead. The HD600 and HD650 will likely still be around, and some people will still prefer the classics, but the new can will be the go to recommendation for a decent mid-fi priced headphone.

 

Yeah, there will always be a market for HD600/650, but the HD700 could use a resurrection and a tune up.

 

This is what I was thinking. Take care of the hd700 treble issues and it could be amazing!

 

This is interesting. Because I always believe HD600/650 would be a perfect pair of headphones for DAC or Amp reviews for the following reasons:

• They scale really well.
• They are well discussed and measured both quantitatively and qualitatively for many years.
  
• Very large portion of headphone enthusiasts experienced (or are experiencing) how hd600/650s sound with average gears.

I prefer several other headphones to hd650. But if someone asks me about the best reference headphones, my answer has consistently been hd650s. And this answer probably will not change in the future.

i would be happy if it's just an all black HD6x0 at a killer price. even better would be an HD650 with new livery, even with the same tuning.

then i would throw myself on someone who could mod it for me's mercy to have it sound right.

(i have zero talent and way too much paranoia [and thumbs] to try any mods on my own.)

as to revealing private information ahead of time: it's really a shame that folks who have confidential information would disrespect the source of that information and make it public here, or anywhere else, before the embargo is lifted. just seems dickish to me.

(plus one on incorporating the HD25 materials.)
