My biggest wish is that the HD6XX has the same detachable cable and connectors that the HD6X0 has. If it is hardwired without a balanced connection, then it would be a dealbreaker for me personally. I hate recabling or reterminating stock cables.

This sounds really cool. As long as it isn't just a slight flavour deviation from the HD6XX signature. The last thing I want is to tell people how to choose between HD650, HD600 and HD6XX when in reality they're all equally good.

I'm struggling to imagine just how different it could possibly be. In a better type of way, that is.

 

Yes, I do suspect that we'll be slightly disappointed in that respect, but happy to be proved wrong. A very black 650 at a keen price would still be a good thing, mind. I think it's too much to hope for wild things like mass loading, balanced cables or sparkleponies in the box. Still, the HD650 (if that's what it is) is a solid headphone, and makes a change from those endless AKG K7xx that Massdrop are always pushing.

I quite like the 70s scifi earpods- they are way more comfy than the oddly noisy velour hinterlands of my belov'd 650s. If you're talking about the stock grey 800, then that 6KHz spike is nasty- I guess that comes from a chassis resonance? However, for non-classical listening, I'd be all over a cheap HD800s, if such a thing were one day available.

 

I just hope for those of us interested in an HD6XX that Massdrop has a reasonable price on them when the lowest price is unlocked. At Amazon, a brand new pair of HD650's is only $339 https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-H...&ie=UTF8&qid=1478170854&sr=1-1&keywords=HD650

I said it a few times, but I cannot believe how stupid I was to sell my HD650's - now I cannot afford another pair anytime soon.

What do you have now? A used one in good condition can be found for 200.

 

Using HD800 (Marv's Z28 mod) and HD700 (Stock, no mods). But the HD650 is such a good headphone, as the majority of us realize. I miss them a lot. Don't get me wrong, the HD800 with Marv's Z28 mod is probably my favorite pair of cans I have personally heard (no I have not heard every headphone so I am sure there may be something else I like better) an the HD700 to me personally sound great too when adding a good EQ setting to them and Calibration. But for the price, the HD650's are just phenomenal, and i regret the day I had to sell them to pay bills.

 

You absolutely don't need to regret having your priorities straight. That'll pay way bigger dividends in the long run. But I get what you mean.
