Put fresh oem pads on my HD800's tonight after living with aftermarket trash for months. Can't believe I waited so long. The magic is back! Dec 29, 2023

Yeah, there’s just no replacement. If you really want to get nervosa about it, @ext1 thought the latest batch of OEM pads aren’t as good as what he had stocked up on before Senn went dark for awhile with manufacturing, iirc. ;)

@roshambo123 Too right! I knew better too from the pad thread here, but I was in dire need of replacements, and Senn and Amazon were sold out. Some lessons you have to learn first hand I suppose.

@internethandle Interesting point! If they had to switch manufacturers, I suppose that could well be, but I think I'm going to do my best to resist the urge to start hunting NOS pre-pandemic oem pads. Just so happy to be back in the fold with my HD800's sounding right again!

SCE surges in LA followed by the outage last night shorted my Yggdrasil's usb. So that's pretty cool... Worst utility co. ever.

That sucks big time. Probably wise to invest in an appropriately sized UPS for the future.

Thanks all. Yeah, this was SCE in Los Angeles County. My Yggdrasil was powered via an emotiva line filter, plugged into a mid-tier furman surge bar. But the surge was strong enough to make a big pop from my speakers in the next room over and guess it somehow got through. Tried it with multiple pc's but no dice. Trying to look at this as a chance to upgrade from gen5 to unison.

Happy day! I let it sit unplugged over night in hopes of draining caps and a miracle. Plugged her back in just now, and in place of the error messages I was getting on both pc's (through about a dozen reboots), my Yggdrasil was recognized and is alive again. Such a weight off!

Picked up a Fiio BTR5 to play with. With Koss KPH30i's via LDAC from a Pixel 4XL, this thing sounds pretty sweet right out of the box.

My Shanling M0 has the same DAC chip and I’m pretty content with it..

@dubiousmike, did you ever hear a difference while playing with the output impedance switch for the HD650/800?

@Pyruvate sorry for the much delayed reply on this! It is easiest to hear the difference in the bass, particularly with hd800's, although the effect is somewhat subtle. With impedance switched to low, deep bass is tighter and more detailed. Switch it to high and it gets a little more rounded off, but mid-bass gets slightly fuller.

You have any experience with the BH phono's?

Afraid not. If you end up taking the plunge though, I'd be interested to hear your impressions.
