Back from the Sony store. Geez that ZX2 is a hefty chunk o' DAP. Took a while, and had to listen to a lot of bass bloaty weird trebly music, but I eventually got the sales guy to shut down all DSP jiggery pokery. I tried to figure it out myself but the UI was set to Chinese and I would have needed the password anyway. Why would they go to the trouble of designing a high quality DAP only to f**k up the music by default before sending it out of the headphone jack? They must be shooting for a target market that needs "effects" to enjoy their music.

All that DSP crap floating around in my head may have messed me up a bit, but I couldn't hear much difference between the ZX2 and my Note 3 using my ER-4Ps. Not enough to make me want to carry it around and use it's clunky UI. I also auditioned the LG V20 with its stock player and then UAPP to confirm the sampling rate of the DAC(s) (supports 44.1kHz/16-bit and 96kHz/24-bit native sampling, at least). The V20 seemed to have slightly smoother treble than the Note 3 (less digititus), though this could have been expectation bias.

So, my conclusion is I'll save my money and just get a new phone next year, either the V20 or S8+ when it comes out.

Did you audition it with EQ off? Some DAPs sound good without EQ but even then sometimes the salespeople play EQ tricks and mess up their presentation...

LG has this persistent bootloop issue that they're now blaming on cables. Yeah...

At first he said he turned everything off but there was still some weird shit going on so I asked him to REALLY turn everything off. He scrolled through all the processes and killed a few, after which things started sounding normal. I A/B'd with my phone and they sounded pretty close. So as far as I can tell EVERYTHING was turned off.

Just for kicks I brought my HD650s along and plugged them in. Bass was rather floppy and things sounded a bit off in the upper-mids and treble, but the latter could have been due to ambient noise.

I read something about that. Will definitely do more due diligence on that before I make my decision, but thanks for the reminder.

Really? Is it only while listening to music? I haven't had any issues with mine, but I don't listen to music on it. Which cables are they referring to?

On a side note... Had that damn Sony gold walkman in the cart since last night... Debating on buying it all night. Just concerned that I won't love it, or that I may like my Cowon daps better. At over 3k, that would make me sick. Amazon has them on sale and I could have by Tuesday of next week. Or I could buy from Audio Advice and have by Thursday...I could return it, but I'd hate to do that on a 3k dap. Really wish I could hear it somewhere first.

Apparently due to shoddy soldering, was quite prevalent in G4 G5 V10 apparently (more frequent than it should have been, and with a very unapologetic LG).

LG said that 3rd party USB C cables cause the issue, but yeah... Unlikely.

No Sony retailer near you has it for demo?

Since getting my JH13 back from JH Audio recently, I've been playing around with the headphone on my Shanling M1 and DFR at work. I love the M1 all around considering its price. While the DFR is nice with my ER-4S, it's next to unusable with the JH13. At, it's lowest volume setting, the DFR sounds washed out and is a little louder than I usually like to listen to. At its second lowest volume setting, it sounds better, but is quite a bit too loud for my ears.

Over the years, with the JH13, I still haven't found a better synergy with the JH13 in the reasonably portable world than my ancient HP-P1. I just wish the HP-P1 battery lasted for more than five hours.

@Grahad That's bullshit... The cables fault... Come on LG. I haven't been able to locate one locally yet that has one for demo unfortunately (sony).

    I don't necessarily know
You have to be the crusader and take the plunge for us and give us impressions. At 3k, or even 1k, everything has to be absolutely perfect and meet or surpass one's expectations. I mean its more than a Yggdrasil plus an amp.....so its asking a lot. I mean it is a hassle, but at the end of the day, its not like you are buying used gear you can't return. Can always send it back to either Amazon or Audio Advice hassle free and not liking the player is completely reasonable, esp at that high end price. Just the only bad part is you can't really hear the full potential because of the lack of 4.4m cables. THAT would have to be a loss you are considering to take, if you purchase. I am tempted to try the wm1a right now too, but to be responsible, i would have to let go of my alo CDM. :(

I'm 99% I'm getting it. Had our best 2 week period ever in our business, so a little bonus for myself. :)

OK... You guys pushed me over the top... I went and ordered it. I'll have it Thursday or Friday, obviously I'm hoping for Thursday. The gold one ordered.

All this talk of Sony gold ... Ravi's 5th Law of DAP Acquisition comes to mind.

I've read good things about it. Probably not that much difference between the 2.

The M1 is currently on Massdrop for ~$129, but that's not why I'm posting here.

Got a laugh from a schmo who responded to a question on MD about whether the M1 was "high-res" or not by stating that (get this) "On paper it supports Hi-Res audio but the FR is only 20hz-20khz"

Darn those cheap DAP's that don't extend well beyond the hearing range of humans!

    Cheers
