This is a really good call. Probably has to do with power supply. I hope it's not actually plutonium based, but I trust schiit to handle fissile materials safely.

In all seriousness, thank you, Jason, for clearing up so much of the rampant speculation. You have given us enough info to be excited and speculate but without spreading misinformation that could lead to confusion.

So my thoughts are SoupRKnowva has the right idea with a new balanced topology for a much lower price, or otherwise serious trickle-down from the higher-end into a more affordable realm.

What about an ethernet an option. An ethernet to AES converter.
Like the rednet 3 but built for audiophiles without all of the channels etc.

I know these devices have a lot of interest on this board but I don't envision them introducing proprietary or rare connectors, converters and protocols. That's much more the PS Audio route, and it locks people in to the Schiit ecosystem or provides a disincentive for new or casual customers, which is a major part of their business.

 

In the same post where he says it's not a DAC-obsoleting thing, he very specifically doesn't respond to the amp-obsoleting speculation.

Thing is, I can't see how you'd make amps obsolete with a different class of product, short of just building other functionality into the amp (like receivers did to integrated amps for speaker purposes). Since it's a desktop, presumably the functionality you'd bundle in with the amp would be, oh, let's say a USB hub with wireless phone charging, and an LED task light.

Seems legit.

 

Case in point: see their handling of the DSD format in their products.

 

Maybe it's a new topology that kicks tremendous ass at a very low price and makes most of the amps on the market look idiotic. I dunno. Really going to have to wait and see because, as you observed, it is a lot harder to imagine huge breakthroughs in non-digital products.
