^^ Yea, it's unmodded. I have SDR but it's not currently installed.

Nice data point, thanks. I suppose it makes sense, it's a very upfront-sounding SS amp, so it's always going to be a bit dicey with a plain HD800. It'd be interesting if you felt differently about the combo with the SDR in. I assume you normally run it like that with an amp that's a little more lush and forgiving?

Maybe we need to persuade someone to plug HD700 in there, and see if they drop dead.

Such a shame but it is what it is i was hoping for a better pairing with the 800 than with the 600 but i guess i would get it on reverse. Im curious, whats your dac?

haha patience amigo. @Ice-man can probably give us some impressions shortly, he had the mjo2+800 combo, and will be receiving the Elears at some point and has a Joti.

I have spent some time with it on multiple occasions. The low level information such as shimmer, amp micings picking up the scratch of certain picking angles, present in the upper frequencies is mostly masked by grain. Grain added where there is none even on other amps that too have some forwardness/treble/stridency issues like the Moon Neo 430 and Rag. Stop accusing people of being wrong/not hearing something when their explained judgement of quality is different than yours despite their impressions being in line with others.

Read what I actually wrote about the Magni 2U and how the GSX MK2 staging is almost always wider but flatter with more treble issues. I don't give a f**k about technicalities or price of the parts used or attempts at "endgame" sound; if tiNorth Korea tries to nuke Hiroshima again and their ICBM crashes into a Korean mountain side, it still missed. If the US actually carpet bombs Pyongyang in return with a "low-tech", B-52, then the US still has one hit to none. Everything sounds wrong on the GSX2 but the M2U sounds pretty good with well-mixed, uncompressed masters with no clipping, presenting a palpable sense of depth created on the mixing console (or in the room) within its limited soundstage even if the metallic percussion timbre is steely and quick bass notes blurred.

Both of those combos are crazy good, particularly if you have nice NOS tubes in the mjo2. It just comes down to your preference and budget. 650/jot has exquisitely good synergy, better than the 800/mjo2. And the value/performace ratio of 650/jot is quite possibly #1 of anything that I've heard or owned. If you're not looking for the fun of the journey, just get 650/jot and call it end game.

If you prefer detail and sound staging, go for 800/mjo2. If you prefer a smoother presentation and a better tone, get 650/jot.

He is simply saying that the 650 and jot is good enough to give you what you want and you can keep the change for better things.

I know you knew that. No need to carry on so snarkishly.

Having heard the 650 on my amp with good tubes, as well as the Teton, Im pretty certain that it would be unfair to disqualify it based on you hearing the 600 on a midfi amp.

People are saying the jot can reveal the 650s scalability which would mean more, lots more detail than than the 600 on an average amp.

For soundstage though from the above amps(not the jot) , I heard the hd650 get a lot deeper but only a little wider.

Of it were me... I would get the jot, 650, and Elear and sell what I don't like to fund the 800.

Do you think SDR on HD800 will make big difference with Jotun?

Also, are mods necessary for HD650 to sound the best from Jotun?

Many hear like mods on both headphones. I've become more of an EQ guy, particularly with the 800. I will install the SDR and report back on changes with Jot.

I don't feel they are a necessity - to the point where I haven't done any mods on the HD650 I am about to send out. I think I will only do Dynamat / massloading mods. I don't plan on cutting a hole in the front foam. It doesn't need it. Jotun seems able to push through the inherent veil and sleepy nature of the stock HD650.

Just curious, what is is this in response to? Did you read 'I'm still favoring the (slightly?) more technical headphones [Elear] over the 650." and somehow interpreted that to "the HD650 is not technical"?

    Just curious.

Can we please get back to Jotunheim and how I think it's making my PM-3 sing even when I'm using my MacBook's built-in DAC as output while I wait for my GO2A to arrive? :)

This is now sounding so ridiculously good that I have to question whether or not the DAC really matters all that much...

(just kidding, it still does. Soundstage collapsed on me as soon as I switched to the MacBook, but tonality remains the same-ish, which is either high praise for Apple, or high praise for Schiit for making an amp that can keep a neutral-ish sound, I think Schiit, but you're welcome to praise the bitten fruit)

I'm a student with limited budget, so I was very cautious about trying Jotun+650 because I own Val2+800. Finally I ordered Jotun+650 today; I just don't have patience to wait until the end of loaner program. I'll sell one of them later.

It's good that you're fortunate enough to be able to spend money on gears. Looking from your history of $$$$ gears, Jotun+650+Elear combo doesn't seem expensive - why don't you try them all & sell whatever you don't like, like you did before?

Let's get back to Jotun. My Jotun will arrive next week. Right now the HD800 is extensively damped, curious how well it competes with 650.
