SE source or balanced source does not matter. A balanced HP cable will take full advantage of the amp and be better than SE headphone cable regardless.

The cable is the last piece of the puzzle (boutique cables at least, you want to take advantage of the balanced inputs/outputs with this amp). If you are sure the setup is "the one", then start to explore interconnects, headphone cable materials, power cords....etc.

BTW, I mostly use Monoprice stuff because I ain't there yet. But I am a believer...

With HD 800, I swear I heard a difference between the ZY cable and the Norne Draug cable. The Norne was better.

Not sure if I gave the wrong impression. In case I did - Venus Audio ebay store was just "closed" for a couple of weeks or so early this year.

When I've seen cable differences discussed on forums, I've never seen a consensus - just controversy.

Yeah I don't know that it's quantifiable. I probably only liked it more because it cost twice as much.

It's like that time I saw the Easter bunny hopping around the kiddie pool in my back yard when I was five. PROBABLY my imagination.

I have seen the subject get messy/heated. I just didn't want @ColtMrFire to think that it would be likely that he would get consensus answers to his question.

With regards to the venus cables, what is used to cover the wires from the cups/plugs to the "Y"? Is that some sort of flexible heat-shrink tubing?

I'm looking at mine now. Sure looks like flexible heat-shrink tubing to me.

One last 650 question for those who have it with Jot. Does it need to be modded to get the most out of it? For that matter is the mod at all necessary?

Not necessary, nor would it necessarily be a bad pairing or poor sound stock from Jotun, but I personally think mods take the 650 up to the next level AND still sound great with the Jotun.

@ColtMrFire Since you can tolerate the T90 treble, you'd probably be best off modding the hd650.

Tried googling "HD650 mod sbaf" without much luck...is the how-to buried in the 650 thread?

I believe a fancy cable won't make one "Jot" of a difference. O-oh!

Today I made a custom shelf for my jot. I didn't like it stacked with Gungnir Multibit and I needed the desk space back. Now it just floats under the desk and the volume knob is just right there at my fingertips. Nothing ground breaking but I like it.
