would this kind of Dynamat work or is the extreme the clear way to go?

The Dynamat you linked is the extreme variety.

Checking out the k240 coin modded pads right now, the slightly darker and bloomy signature is a nice touch over the coin-modded stock pads, I really like it so far.

Have to say that the qp1r makes magic with the 650. Best DAP solution for full sized headphones that I've come across so far. Needs high gain, but the sound is full punchy and resolving. No weak sauce here...this DAP has got some kick!!

I've come into contact with a slightly aesthetically damaged valhalla that I could snag for a decent price. What do you guys think? Would the OTL be noticeable jump from my O2+ODAC? (Will probably keep the combo to use ODAC)

Only one way to find out for sure - try it out.

But the answer is yes, a OTL would be a significant improvement.

Have just the rear foam mod installed while I wait to get some dynamat. Can definitely say the imaging is better, but music got less enjoyable to me. Bass got a little uncontrolled and the treble is just a little too sharp.

No question. This headphone offers great scale and putting a better amp in front of it will yield nice results for sure. Valhalla 2 is a very good match btw. Stock tubes are even pretty decent.

I heard the same thing and the dynamat fixed the bass but for the highs you can try some k240 foam.

Do they sound as musical as stock with the dynamat though?
stock 650s put a smile on my face when I listened to them and now I can see the appeal but they're meh

Thanks for the reminder of my car audio days. Took a spin through the Second Skin site, and their sampler packs may be a great option for headphone modding:
Comes with samples of Damplifier and Damplifier Pro (foil/butyl dampening), Overkill Pro (closed cell foam), Luxury Liner / Luxury Liner Pro (mass loaded vinyl), and Heat Wave Pro / Thermal Block (foil-faced thermal insulation).

The dynamat makes them more enjoyable to my ears. I think it gives better focus to the rest of the FR as well but you should really hear for yourself. The K240 foam makes them warmer again perhaps that is more to your liking. Just try different things. Maybe try tubes if you haven't yet. Lot's of potential with this headphone.

You guys you need to stick this to the front page for people doing the Dynamat Mod.

$2 freaking bucks! and you get a sample of different types of Dynamat!!

B-Quiet is a different brand than Dynamat. Both are focused on the same type of product though. Second Skin would beat out both companies in performance though.

There's also FatMat... or was it Rattlemat? rattletrap? fattrap? Ah crap, it's one or both of those.

I've also tried using adhesive roof sheeting. It works, but... not worth the mess.

I had a problem where the pads of my 650 were not sitting on ears properly - they put more pressure at the top, like this: /0\ This is down to my weird lumpen head shape but I thought if anyone else had experienced the problem they might appreciate this solution. (Can you see the pic OK?). You trim the ends of a HD650 pad slightly and pop them into the frame - couldn't be easier - it's nice and secure too.
