i finally getting a chance to play doom. i first tried it out on my brother's computer. was cranked at max settings with 4k resolution on his samsung monitor. i only played first couple levels and loved it. it looked really great and the beginning of it from the start is badass... it does bring back the quick pace shoot'em up gameplay back and lot of stuff from the original doom from first couple levels played... fast forward a few days and my other brother told me i could just borrow his ps4 and doom to play it which was really cool. i was bit concerned at first cause everyone knows i don't use digital connectors or anything and my 32'' CRT HDTV only has a DVI connector with no dvi audio inputs except couple optical plugs so, was concerned at first how i get sound out of my system... figured it out. use the headphone jack on the ps4 controller lol. worked too.

now though, i still use crt due to picture and color quality and even with 4k here and common i still haven't felt like upgrading yet but, will pretty soon i guess. ps4 works great and looks great at 1080i resolution. looks super sharp. i actually think it looks sharper than most of the 1080p ips led panels i see nowadays still. but, anyhoo, while not as detailed as the pc version it still looks and plays great on the ps4 i personally think. i am still playing though since i haven't beat it yet but, have basically have all weapons so, i know i'm probably close to it.

i find the weapon upgrades pretty cool and the suit upgrades(health, ammo, armor) but, the suit power ups there is couple useful ones and rest is pretty meh. don't care for the suit power ups too much. the rune trials are more useful i think. i play it like i use to play doom pretty much. it having no to pretty much simple half-ass background story is expected as well so it never bothered me one bit since it was meant to take doom back to it's roots.

the monsters are cool. i got excited when i first saw my first meatball(lol, yea i use to call the eyeball demons meatballs from doom) and was like ''hey! a meatball!'' and seeing the pinkies back is really cool too. but, yea, so far love the game and defiantly plan on finishing witin a day or so. been having fun on it and it's been kinda forever playing a game again. i think been over a month since i touched a game before. but, anyhoo, so far i been liking it.

EDIT: i forgot to mention above about one other small complaint about doom. the sound. while everything from the atmosphere and music is awesome. the issues i have is it seems heavily filtered in the sub-bass area big time. no rumble from heavy moving doors and no sub-bass slam from the sic ass double barrel shot gun. there is very little low-end grunt in this game. the frinkin cyber demon should be shaking the floor walking around but, nope. while everything else is pretty much awesome, the low-end content is really disappointing. i am far from a bass head but, do appreciate good un-distorted low-frequency content when it's called for.

finished Doom yesterday and have to say it's one of the most badass fps games i ever played for longest time. it was insanely fun. now i can't wait for another Doom II: hell on earth! bring it on! can't comment on multiplayer aspect since i don't like and never bothered with online gaming.

So I know I'm a year or so behind the times but just picked up Middle-Earth - Shadow of Mordor a week or so ago during the steam sale. Can't recall the last time I had this much fun with an action game. Sped up Assassin's Creed style movement + Batman style combat just feels right while massacring orc's in an LOTR setting with a big sword, a bow interface that slows time and gruesome stealth dagger kills. The game almost doesn't need a story line due to the nemesis system and random mini-boss battles.

i actually like that game too. lot better than expected and didn't know it was a lotr type game till i played it. i feel though combat on my part is a bit slow and not too responsive but, knowing me, my brain naturally processes information at like a kagillion miles per second and i tend to react much quicker than the controller and game could keep up with. ninja guaiden is probably slowest i go when comes to game combat personally. it's my only small complaint but, other than that i really liked that game as well. was very interesting.

Do you happen to play some competitive multiplayer games? Those are the type of games I enjoy most (by far) and I'm a sucker for responsive and punishing combat. Hell, I can't even play dota 2 or any shooter besides CS because they feel slugish.

Figured you might have some suggestions since you too seems to crave fast and responsive gameplay.

This was one of the first PS4 games I picked up, didn't realize it then but I know now just how damn good it was. Enjoy it, man. It's sad that there were no sequels.

actually i don't. i played like halo 3 maybe once online but, that was with a friend. i do remember CS several times though the most but, i never got into online gaming much, even on pc. i'm more casual type of gamer and play every now and then. i only picked up on a few games lately due to interest actually into them. i don't really own anymore consoles cept my old playstation. last gen consoles i had i gave away to my brother and every 360 i owned i either gave away or sold back then dirt cheap to just get rid of them. latest game i ever got into lately is of course mainly for nostalgia feeling and of course i just love doom and liked how they did it this time around with it.

i never bothered with the xbox one or ps4 or wii u this time around. wasn't really interested. xbox one not supporting 1080i was a big killer for me too since while some think it's silly but, i still rock a couple 32'' CRT HDTV's with hdmi and dvi(yup! sony had crt hdtv's with hdmi) and while they have full 1920x1080 lines they still only do 1080i but, picture is super clean and phenomenal on them that still best even some of todays ips led panels nowadays i feel.

use to have a 24'' sony gfw900 i think was called for pc gaming i got from a guy who gave it to me for free cause he got a newer lcd screen just to save space. he clearly knew what he was giving up and remember spending over 1k easily on it but, just wanted space. that thing was probably best picture i ever seen but, not to long before i had to move it just died on me so, i threw it out. was big shame though since was my favorite screen ever...one day though again i might go 4k but, in no rush. still have lot audio projects on hold still.....

So cute and cool, but so limited. Could have been so much more with an updatable catalog of games. Has inspired me to revisit plans of gutting my old Nintendo (still working!) and putting a mini-itx system in it so I can emulate everything up to PS2 and Wii.

I thought this was wonderful idea, looks like it captures the feel of slapping in a new cart... nintendo should snag this idea:

Dark Souls III anyone? I just adore the whole series. I'm currently at ng+ and just exploring the world in a awe. Gotta love the sonic atmosphere too, so many times I've almost shat myself when some god forbidden monstrosity jumps screaming and trying to shish kebab my sorry ass. Multiplaying features are also quite unique and entertaining. You died.

Huge From Software lover here. I've been a fan of Dark Souls since... well, Demon's Souls. Been enjoying DS3 immensely, though I have to say it is disappointing for me in three main respects.

The first---and biggest---issue is just how linear the game's overall progression feels; there are branching paths at various points, and it is certainly cool being able to do late game stuff if you snuff a certain NPC, though most of the branching paths lead to dead ends, and that feeling of exploration just isn't as overwhelming as it was in the first two Souls games (and yes, despite what one may think of DS2, it was an extemely non-linear game in terms of overall progression). I feel like DS3 and Bloodborne follow a similar trajectory: focusing on a dramatic narrative first and feeling like one is immersed in a fully realized world second.

Note that I said overall game progression felt linear, not the levels themselves. This is something fans tend to conflate when arguing that, for example, DS2 was more linear than DS3. It was not. However, with the exception of its DLC, the levels of the second game themselves felt very straightforward by Souls standards. The return of Miyazaki is definitely felt in the third game, and, like Bloodborne, DS3 has some amazingly designed levels that focus on opening up shortcuts while utilizing both horizontal and vertical space.

The second issue I have is with DS3's build limitations. While not as severe as Bloodborne's, there is definitely less variety here than in the second game. Poison for example is no longer viable. Heavy armor is kind of useless now outside of fashion, thanks largely to the lack of poise. Duel wielding is much more limited now, and power stancing in gone (along with a number of other legitimate improvements from DS2). Twinblades are no more, as are bow infusions. Sorcerers and clerics are basically jokes now, as not only are their spells as easy to dodge as they ever were, but now their damage has been nerfed into the ground. Also the one new status effect---frost---feels underdeveloped, and it would have been neat to see it play a larger role in builds and PVE.

Lastly comes From's bizarre decision to matchmake invaders with worlds that have two or more players summoned, thus prioritizing ganks. Actually it's not so bizarre as apparently gank spanking is a big thing in Japan? Or so I've heard. TBH I think life shouldn't be easy for invaders; if you forcibly invade another world, you should face an uphill battle. The feeling of overcoming those stacked odds is what Souls is all about. What annoys me more is that co-op with friends now turns into an invasion-every-few-minutes fest, and I'm basically turned into a ganker by the game.

Aside from these three main complaints, Dark Souls 3 is legitimately engaging and enjoyable as a long time fan of the series. I'm the sort of person who loves collecting stuff, and I have to pretty much farm every weapon and spell and piece of armor in the game. I'm not *that* enamored with all the old nostalgia call backs, but the new armor and weapons are fantastic looking and fantastic feeling. Mostly. Speaking of which, I'm glad stuff like Wolnir's Holy Sword and the Crescent Moon Sword got a buffed with actual faith and intelligence scaling now.

Most of the bosses were fun---perhaps on the easier side, with a few notable exceptions---and their designs were well done. In fact I have some new series favorites in some of the late game bosses.

Really hyped for the DLC. If Bloodborne's "The Old Hunters" and past Souls are anything to go by, it's gonna be truly epic.

In other videogame related news, I'm really hyped for October. Not just because of the previously mentioned Dark Souls 3 DLC, but also because of: NiOH, The Last Guardian, the PS4 release of Skyrim, and some other stuff I'm probably forgetting.

Major shoutout goes to DOOM 2016 for being one of the best FPSs I've played in a long, long time. I absolutely LOVE the new lore of the series which is interesting without messing up the original storyline. I am really hyped for singleplayer DLC and the inevitable sequel.

Played a bit of the new Deux Ex. So far it's not grabbing me like Human Revolution did. For whatever reason.

Holy smokes MF is here LOL. Glad to see you're still around! Was wondering what the heck happened to you. (This is Idsynchrono from HF btw)

That aside, I've found myself inundated with way too much to play in the last few years and not nearly enough time nor interest to complete any of it. I've got backlogs dating back to PS2 at this point LOL.

I did finally beat the Dragonslayer Armor in DS3 the other day but progress is slow. I think the thing that bugs me about DS3 (and Bloodborne to an extent) is that for a lot of the big bosses, you can wreck them by simply just hugging them the entire fight with a good shield and blocking at the right moments as a lot of the time, their attacks will somehow just sail above your head. Other than that, I'm definitely enjoying it, although I miss the superior ambience/art style of BB.

I'm super tempted to nab DOOM, and especially after the GameStop sale but man... Must resist.

Only other stuff I'm looking forward to is FFXV (please be good), Fractured But Whole and Last Guardian (please be good)

@MuppetFace I feel you. I've tried so many times to play with my friend just to hit some roleplaying gank squad. I suppose by weakening poison etc the gane is just "working as intended". Game devs work in mysterious ways.

When reached SL 128 I had drunken idea and reallocted my stats to hollow/luck build with decent dex. Well.. The way to profaned coal is gonna be interesting as I'm currently roaming in the swamps. There might be some frustrating moments ahead. At least I have dual katanas and pretty much every other dex oriented weapons collected already. Gonna keep up leveling and just forget the mp meta SL restrictions. Waiting eagerly for that first DLC too!

Salt and Sanctuary is nice compliment to the soulslike game inventory. Highly recommended.

It's a total shame that Nioh won't be released to PC. Maybe some day I'll finally break and obtain gaystation. Bloodborne should ease my agony:).

Salt and Sanctuary is awesome! Tho geez it's waaaay harder than any Souls game IMHO. Like a true old school level of difficult. I'm also really psyched for Necropolis whenever it comes out on PSN. It's a rougelike Souls type game with a nice sense of humor and killer art style.

I'm mad at Sony Entertainment right now. First for the PS4 Pro nonsense. Secondly, for nixing mod support for Fallout 4 and, especially, Skyrim remastered. I guess they don't want people breaking their PS4s by installing a shit ton of dubious mods or something, but still... why not hire a dude to be mod quality control for them or something?

Speaking of Fallout 4, I tried once again to get into it: this time with a super buff melee build. Weapons like the flaming knifes and nuclear power hammers are fun. Unfortunately I just can't do it past the first few levels. The new Fallouts (with the big exception of New Vegas) just don't appeal to me. I don't like the way their worlds feel, the way their NPCs act, the V.A.T.S. combat system, the vague and unsatisfying plot lines... plus the games don't even let me really make up my own character back stories.

As much criticism as the new Elder Scrolls games get, I definitely prefer them to the new Fallouts in most of the above areas.

Speaking of games I just can't get into, the new Deus Ex still just doesn't hold my attention. The new characters don't interest me, it feels like there's a disconnect between Jensen's story and what's happening in the world at large, and the game seriously insults your intelligence by having air duct vents fall off just as you happen to walk by, like HEY LOOK, STUPID! Ugh.

I really hope the new Dishonored grabs me more.

ALSO: on the subject of Dark Souls, the selfish and unrealistic part of me kinda wants From to just make Dark Souls or Souls-like games forever. Tho obviously the series is already getting stale, and I'd rather see From unshackled to explore their artistic whims. Still... Dark Souls kinda ruined gaming for me. Their formula---especially the combat system---just feels so right. They're action oriented RPGs that trim out the fat and leave all the richness of lore, exploration, collecting, and discovery.

Even Dark Souls 3 which is likely my least favorite in the series is still a masterpiece IMHO. I've gone through the game several times with different builds. My first time thru was with a standard quality build and a great machete, eventually replaced by a refined Lothric Knight Greatsword. A big electric sword the size of a big electric man. Then I did pure strength and the Fume Ultra Ridiculous Sword / Yhorm's Great Smasheroony. Did all three caster type builds too. Now I'm doing a run with the Onislayer Greatbow. Isn't that the best name? Onislayer.

I hope From revisits Bloodborne. In an interview Miyazaki supposedly said they had one more Souls style game planned in the near future, so.... maybe? As for "taking the Souls series in a new direction" after #3, I almost wish they'd just put the series to rest rather than changing the formula to try to prolong the brand name.

It would be cool if From brought the Kings Field series back. A modern, faster paced first person exploration game with all the atmosphere and unique weapons From can muster would be amazing.

MF, you describe my sentiments on the Fallout games bit for bit. Dues Ex: Human Revolution is one of those games I had to force myself to play, in the end I enjoyed it but man, it does you no favors pulling you in.

Character back stories are something I probably spend way to much time on when playing elder scrolls. That aspect is sorely missed for me as well in Fallout.

Oddly enough though, I did not like 3 and only mildly enjoyed NV, but not enough to finish it. However I have really enjoyed 4. Its odd especially as a long time elder scrolls fan.
