Wow. Epic production of an epic song. All in less than six minutes! Superb!

(For decades, I thought the woman's name was Fanny. The internet has disabused me of many of my misheard/misunderstood lyrics, but it doesn't necessarily mean that I now hear them right!)

A favourite small gem from The Band:

It is. In the chorus it could be either "Fanny" or "Annie", but the last verse refers unambiguously to "Miss Fanny" (at 4:41 in the video Bixby posted).

    It is Fanny.

This song is a favorite to sing around the fire at night when we are out camping, and it is not just us, you can go to any sort of outdoor festival around here and you can be sure when night falls some group somewhere will be doing their own rendition of The Weight. Myself and a few of my friends have gotten quite good at the harmony parts, despite what is often a not insignificant amount of alcohol consumption.

And for anyone who has not seen The Last Waltz (directed by Martin Scorsese), check it out. It is one of the best live concert documentaries ever made, and it is not just me that thinks so.

Thanks. I guess I got confused by Anna Lee (same person or different? I guess I'll never know).

It is a gem of a song, with magic in every verse. I particularly love this...

    I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide;
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side.
I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on, let's go downtown."
She said, "I gotta go, but m'friend can stick around."
Oh, by the way... Also... I always thought Crazy Chester caught the singer in the bar. And I thought he was going to fix the singer's rap --- as in sort out some criminal charge or take the blame.

    Hey ho.

It is indeed wonderful. I think I have the DVD, I certainly have the album (vinyl, I think), and often listen to songs from it.

Shane MacGowan, lead singer of The Pogues.

He was a hell of a songwriter--his stuff sounded like it had been written 200 years ago and had been played in pubs ever since.

Great front man, too. The single best small-venue concert I ever attended was when I saw the Pogues with their original lineup (including MacGowan on vocals and Cait O'Riordan, the future Mrs. Elvis Costello, on bass) in St. Andrew's Hall, Detroit, in 1986. MacGowan was magnetic. And drunk. James Fearnley was playing with such intensity that sweat was dripping off him and literally pooling on the top of his accordion. O'Riordan was standing rock still in the center of it all, expressionless, the epitome of cool and f**k-you attitude. Just a great gig.

I'll second that. Was lucky enough to see them live. Surprised he lasted as long as he did with how he treated his body. The world's a better place because of him, and he won't soon be forgotten.

More of a poet/activist than a musician, although I read that he was that too: Benjamin Zephaniah.

I read that he turned down an OBE (British medal). Who the f**k thought it was a good idea to offer an Order Of The British Empire to a black Rastafarian activist!
