~ 15 years ago I used to charge people to clean their laptops when they spilled stuff in there. Some were just fubar, others could be cleaned. Either way, $200 for the service. It takes a crap ton of time, patience, and is a pain in the ass, which is why I charged what I did. Good luck.
@Elnrik honestly, given how much of a massive pain in the dongle this looks, I'm not at all surprised by the cost. Gotta keep eejits like me from getting complacent, after all :P
@bixby I'm leaning towards that solution a bit, yeah. Keyboard seems to be working just fine still (using it right now), but I like the sound of having a proper keyboard for the first time in two years. Also, cleanliness is a big plus!
For the future: If they are affordable in the Islands, I would invest in a mechanical keyboard with Cherry switches. Easy to remove the keys for cleaning out the base.
Elrick beat me to it, but I would second not bothering. Laptop keyboards tend to be real tricky (a result of space and cost constraints)- I just peeked under a Dell and it looks like a plastic scissor arrangement, which looks far too easy to snap. Your laptop looks like it has chicklet keys, which will be even harder work on.
@Uri Cohen I have a friend who's into nice keyboards with Cherry switches and all, I recall, so I could very likely ask him to help me pick one out. Thanks for the advice!
@JustAnotherRando Chiclet keys these are, yeah. Sigh, I get that they had to cut some corners to keep the price down but this is just irritating. Feels nice enough to type on, at least, but apparently impossible to clean.
@Lyer25 no problem! There's different types of Cherry switches, so I would ask your friend when ready to pick a keyboard with a Cherry switch that feels good with your hands (i.e. I like Cherry Blues, but some perfer Cherry Browns).
.... I swear to the Lord above I don't need another money sink. I just looked up the prices of some "nice" keyboards using Cherry switches and holy fajitas.
Duly noted though, I'll be demoing em before committing!
Don't get into the keyboard rabbit whole. It's still cheaper than audio, but it's a time sink.
Also... Cherry is a bit... ATX-m50? But with modding potential (think desoldering every single switch, popping them open, replacing springs and lubing, then resoldering and replacing with third party caps).
@Jinxy245 *fewer :))
But yeah, spit takes. Fun to watch, not nearly so fun to clean up after XD
@bengo Compressed air! Totally forgot that was a thing. Wondering if it'll be any help considering how little space there is, but worth giving a shot. Might have some blu tac lying around...
