Sister's phone got nabbed by some jerkoff. Partly on her for being careless, yes. And she got a replacement anyway so all good, just a bit worried about personal info and all that jazz.

You can remotely erase the iPhone if she has "find my iPhone" on. Just log into iCloud through a web browser.

I had to do something similar when I lost my Android phone. I could track where it was located, but I wasn't going to go vigilante.

I don't think she had it enabled, I was thinking using the IMEI to render it unusable so the best the thief can hope for is to sell it for parts. Could be Google skills are weak but all recommendations I'm seeing so far are re: Find My iPhone. Gah.

a stolen iPhone might as well be marked cash-- people are dumb
& yeah find my iPhone is awesome... you can remote lock it down, get it's GPS, have send out an alert... did that once & it was in the lost & found at a grocery store

^ surprised she didn't have the fingerprint enabled, it's so seamless and doesn't slow you down

It was a 7, she had the fingerprint enabled. In hindsight data should be safe since a thief will have to wipe the device to use it, yeah? Don't want to give em the satisfaction of being able to use it though, so still hoping for a self-destruct feature, ideally while in their pocket. Sigh

yeah, data is safe-- iPhone is encrypted (only option) -- wiping the phone is instant cause it's just wiping the key, data is just white noise after that.

That's reassuring. Definitely gonna bug her to set up more security on the new phone, not to mention pay more attention to it. Thanks!

EDIT: in the event that someone does wipe the phone though, any chance it can still be rendered unusable? Thinking we can show proof of ownership to Apple and they can remotely brick it.

there's probably a process... the 7 does still have a physical sim card, beyond that the phone generates uuid's per app and those rotate all the time... no fixed MAC address for privacy -- bet they have the carrier blacklist the sim right away

explore the options on locking down the new one... you can even enable 10 password fails, then it auto wipes
