It's like an exchange student. Accessible and well executed. But maybe just a wee bit too polite.

Hmm, I think I would say it's kind of an evolution of the sound presented in Lateralus, and yeah Lateralus had a clean and subdued sound, but until Fear Inoculum came out it was easily my favorite Tool record. Im of the opinion that Fear Inoculum is a progressive metal masterpiece.

"Lateralus" and "10.000 Days" are really unique albums, hard to top. Very memorable. The new one is okay. "7empest" has the energy I want to hear. Most other tracks on the new album have less impact. "Fear Inoculum" falls short of a masterpiece for me. Tool evolved, the album tough lacks something for me.

To me it feels like they overpolished everything. Songwriting suffered the most.

Lyrics used to be Tool's strength. I hope that will return at least partially.

I guess different strokes for different folks, but I always found Tool's lyrics a bit of a weak point. Of course based on my tastes and sensitivities. YMMV.

Lyrics can keep songs and albums coherent. Instrumentally the album can be awesome but sometimes lyrics add a dimension that make the music more memorable. Fear Inoculum lacks some coherency for me. You can go Rush, you can go Journey (yes Journey) but a story of some kind helps.
