I was thinking of building Grado-like headphones with the Symphones. Real good Grados seem kind of expensive for the build quality. I figured it's better, cheaper, and might be more fun to DIY in this case. I'm still debating this though, because comfort could be the deal breaker for me. I still remember the hurt I got from on-ears back in the days (PX100).
There's another option. I could save money for the Aeolus, and forget about the Grado hype. Do you think the Hemps and Symphones are competitive with the Aeolus?
Actually DIY way may not be that cheap. The ones I have costed mid-high tier grado (according to the prev owner). Customization and flexible choice for parts could be more obvious benefits. Btw with better padding and nicer cable, comfort could easily exceed original grados.
Aeolus could sound more normal and traditional. Hard to compare without fully knowing your preference. To my *weird* taste, hemps rival verites well. Different rather than better-worse. In fact, I found them complementary.
I prefer the tonality of the FDX1s with the blue filters over all my headphones. I like open headphones for comfort and stage, so I listen to the HD650Ks a lot, and sometimes to the Verums with perforated pads when I can take more treble.
Amp/DAC wise, I have a Modi multbit and a Vali 2, but I much prefer my new Modius/Asgard 3 combo. No more digititus, great bass, and smooth mids up to the top range.
