...but the gain switch effects the pre out, and the "flavor" of the Lyr + (detailed but "smooth") is being heard. My Saga OG is more transparent and "raw"
For this test no tube so far, but I'm confident tube/no tube the "flavor" of the Lyr + will come through since the pre is post-gain stage. It's not bad - I have spent as much time with the Lyr as I have the Starlett since getting the Atrium loaner, but with the Starlett I'm going (in a few days probably) put the Saga back in because I don't want (Lyr +) + (Starlett) when I listen to it.
I use a Saga in front of the Starlett just for the remote, so I don't tube roll with it anymore either, just keeping a new production Tung Sol in it which I found to be the most extended, non-bloomy, transparent tube I have found.
For remote volume control. I have this recliner in the middle of my office (where all my desktop gear is) that I relax into for long listening sessions, and it's about 7 feet back from the Starlett. Digital (Roon or something else) is not quite good enough in many cases.
Thanks for the impressions! This honestly sounds not too far off from when I briefly used the Lyr 3 as a preamp, too much of the character of the amp came through. It did sound nice but not transparent. I love my OG Saga, it's the heart of my system.
No Claritas this is my first Lyr, which I briefly heard at the Austin show, just enough to determine it would replace my Asgard 3. I always figured I would end up with an DSHA3F but it did not impress me enough (again, show conditions) so I just went with the Lyr +
I just need an "auxiliary" SS as the Starlett is my goto, and so far the Lyr + is doing nicely...lol how I justified "needing" two relatively $expensive$ amps ;)
I can understand it. I use four desktop amps regularly (for Paradox, HD-600, ESP-950, and IEMs). So, I'm unwilling to spend more than ~$1,250 on any single headphone amp. And, in any case, I'm going to buy speakers eventually.
