I'm a HD600 guy having extensively used both. If you preferred one over the other the one you didn't pick likely had some bugbears that were dealbreakers for you (Midbass hump and lack of last octave air in the 650 for me)
The 3K spike on the 600 was an issue for me. Also, treble is more refined on the 650 to my ears. Not night and day.. but the 3K spike became annoying enough for me to go to the 650. It's been a long while since I've heard the 600, so i'd be curious to hear it again off a TOTL rig. If I had a 600, I'd try strategically damping the rear baffle and maybe liner under the front foam (no other mods, though).
For me, it's alot about genres. I just like classical, especially strings, with the HD600. And yet, it does other genres well. If i didn't listen to classical, it would be the HD650.
Just to reiterate, I don't find the 600s deficient in any significant way. The only reason I'm interested in the 650 is for the synergy with the Joti, but it's possible that even with the synergy I'll still prefer the 600. I preferred the 600 with the Valhalla 2.
I've had both at the same time and they always were too much alike to keep both... But I've had to convince myself of that several times! The reality is that nothing gets close to what i like without getting headphones that cost 3x more. It's then i start thinking... Maybe I'll get both. I've got to leave this thread...
I've had both (not at the same time though), and while I enjoyed the HD600's I do prefer the modded HD650's. New authentic pads are well worth it, and I found the HD650 headband pad to be much more comfortable than the HD600's (HD600's headband pad caused a pressure point on the top of my head).
