I ordered a pair of NOS Valvo 6922, hoping they sound better. I refuse to believe that the Sovteks are the best it can do.

amperex is a big name, but they made a lot of bad sounding tubes in their later orange and green eras...

the Valvos should be nice tho, depending on the sound you're trying to sculpt.

I just want less HF emphasis. The Sovteks are like every new production Russian tube I've heard, bright and thin. The Valvos are early-mid 60's Heerlen, supposed to be meatier, idk they were $25 for the pair shipped from Romania, but looked at detailed pics and everything indicates they're not fake.

You should try some 6N23P's. Not the warmest, but not the brighest either. Otherwise, for new production, you can try some JJ's.

I think if the Vavlos don't work out I'm just going to bite the bullet and go with NOS Mullard. I just swapped in the solo Bugle Boy and a Sovtek, the results are acceptable for now.

It looks like that takes 12AU7, which you might find really good ones cheaper. Like some old RCAs or Tung Sols even. Not sure what you are going for.

No. I saw a Sunvally DAC that used 12AU7's. Yours might be different. If it uses 6DJ8/6922's now, you can use 12AU7's with an adapter.

That's the newer model that uses 12AU7, this one is older, mayhaps I will consider adapter if the Vavlos don't pan out, but now I'm kind of liking bugle boy/sovtek combo.

I'm an idiot. I had to switch amps to take pictures for a prospective buyer and the tone controls on the one I put into the system were all over the place, the orange Amperex sound fine now. Didn't notice until I put on a record last night with the big speakers and the sound was way off.
