They want a one time passcode to make a delivery. They don't tell you that when you place the order. The morning of the delivery I get an email with the passcode. The driver shows up texts the request for the passcode at 11:26a (I'm in the shower) and at 11:28 texts that he is unable to make the delivery.
I catch up to him 2 doors away and he refuses to accept the passcode and give me the package. He said that he will try again tomorrow. And if I'm not sitting by my phone during that 2 minute window tomorrow? Then what? We do this dance for 6 months?
The kicker... the item costs $149. Amazon Customer Support tells me that items over $100 require a passcode. Which is false because they left a $300 pair of boots on the driveway for my wife yesterday
Not so good experience buying expensive items from Amazon for me as well lately. Ordered MacBook at a good deal which they cancelled 2 days later, then they delivered me some pillow for Quest 3. I now do price match with BestBuy or BHPhotovideo.
Also I find walking in person in BestBuy and returning expensive item more reliable then UPS picking it up and taking their own sweet time in delivering it to warehouse.
We still order quite a bit from Amazon, but I'm moving away from them more and more, often towards Walmart now that Amazon is making their customer service look responsive ;)
This country runs on "OTP"s. You can't make your Amazon order and pay by card without an OTP. They are involved in just about every online/phone transaction. You even need one to begin your journey with an Uber driver.
Interesting. I average about 2 Amazon orders a week. Just had a delivery this morning. Have never had to use a OTP. I use them for 2FA for things like online accounts and VPN of course but not for shopping. I could see the point if you were having something delivered to a different address, but they know my CC info, they know my address. Still unclear what a OTP adds.
@Kernel Kurtz I have not been dinged with the passcode thing, but others in our part of the city have. I'm assuming it's some algorithmic nonsense based on value of item and rate of loss in the area, but still... sounds like a pain in the ass.
The best thing I did last year was to get rid of my Amazon prime membership. Sure everything takes 1-2 days longer but it's very satisfying to not contribute to Jeff bezos's outlandish space trips.
I get the one-time passcode thing and don't have a problem with it. My problem is the implementation
They need to tell you the item that you are order will need an OTP before you order
They need to give you more than 2 minutes to respond to their text with the OTP. I was in the shower. I could have been driving or in a meeting at work. I could have been on another call.
The driver told me that they are not allowed to text for the passcode until they are on the property. And they can not wait any longer than a "regular delivery" for a response. He said he is allowed 2 minutes for a "regular delivery"
Yeah, if they are using it as proof of delivery that is dumb, because it is no such thing and has the same issues that a photograph does, which they have been doing for a long time. It could be seen as consent to leaving your parcel when you are not home, which might protect them somewhat against claims, but it is not like the drivers ever made an effort to check if you are home before.
and to add one final comment - the delivery instructions on my account are to leave packages inside the garage. Those instructions have been the same for at least 10
...years and we have never had a problem. Heck, on Saturday they left a $300 pair of boots for my wife inside the garage... no OTP. I don't know why a $150 solar filter for my camera triggered the need for an OTP, but since the solar eclipse is tomorrow... I'm beyond pissed
Never expect consistency from the government or any any institution of any size. You're just a number, not a person /customer. Randomly you will be hit with this or that policy, and then the next time randomly you will not.... Sorry for the cynicism it's true and we all know it
Corporate gives a huge toss --- for its profits and its billionaire founders. Not for its customers. And any other impression, when a business is young, is just a loss leader.
