    hello,

@velvetx, you are close to the right track. it is not so much immediate upgrade, but more along the lines of when the iPods fail (which they will), is there any current dap that looks like it might have similar peripheral support. i.e. small desktop speaker docks that charge the device for the commute home, all in one dac/amp solutions that do the same.

i recognize that i may be completely delusional in this inquiry. and it may be that a dap/portable amp with a charging while stationary option might be the best i can hope for. or Mrs ForBin gives up on SQ and just uses her phone.

as it stands she is happy with what she has at work (as low fi as it is) and there are no other products currently available (in my research) that do what the now obsolete ones she uses do.

also it is entirely possible that the time of a dap being the source for these use models is completely past.

Ok. In regards to what you are asking there is one other thing that I know that connects to a lot of devices but unfortunately then you are treading into smartphone territory and that is bluetooth. There are so many things with bluetooth now a days if there is one thing that Apple does not have control over it's Bluetooth. However you obviously take a hit in sound quality but you gain access to a ton of other devices (honestly much cheaper than many of the iPod specific products)

My suggestion is this. You say you are going to degrade your sound with your smartphone but guess what portable amps/dacs are made to connect to? That's right the smartphone/dap. Just take the Chord Mojo for example (using this because it just came out and has a lot of connections). It allows you to connect your portable source into it and listen to high quality sound. To me if you were to retire your iPod and didn't want to use a DAP that is what I would do. In regards to charging and whatnot there are a lot of power bank devices to ensure you stay charged and mobile. Also the advantage to using a smartphone is if you have one with a micro sd card slot you can fit a 200+ GB card into that thing and be set.

I hope this helps I don't want @MrsForBin on her 30 pin iPod then when it goes out she has nothing and is sad :(

Ah is that so, my apology. Does not have experience with 8741, I thought just one last digit difference of a four digit unit number is simply a minor update or so

How different is that one compared to the 8740?

I second @velvetx notion for a bluetooth solution. I would assume that just moves the bottleneck from the speakers - which AFAIK tend to be mediocre with integrated Ipod solutions - to transmission. Overall SQ shouldn't degrade much. If at all. You - or she - would still only need one cable, most likely a ubiquitous micro USB, for charging.
There's more and more dedicated DAPs, such as the Lotoo Paw 5000 or some of the AKs that have integrated BT. I kinda suspect for this very use case.

I have an Ihifi 770 - NOT the C version - for sale if anybody's interested. tbh, I'm not a fan of its UI and I simply don't use it enough to justify keeping it. Will try to put up a FS classified later today.

    Sony A series DAP, UDA-1 DAC/amp, SS-H3 speakers. I haven't heard any of them.

I've had an exchange of emails with a Chord dealer this week. It looks like it's going to be mid-November before Mojo shows up in any meaningful quantities at U.S. dealers.

Well I yolod and pre-ordered the onkyo dp-x1 offoff price Japan. Total came to 610USD shipped. MSRP is suppose to be like 999. I'm a little worried about the sabre implementation, but in terms of specs it really is the perfect dap. Couldn't think of anything else id want.

Awesome I am not too much of a fan of Sabre DACs (usually too bright for me) and I wasn't impressed by the Pioneer DAP but I am excited to hear the Onkyo.

Ya sabre implementation seem to vary, you get lh labs on one end and Yudong on the other.

I'm just tired of compromise with daps, was close to pulling the trigger on the AK. Jr but couldn't stomach it, only 1 sd card slot, not a lot of driving power and a buggy u I. almost pulled the trigger on a geek out v2 + but got off put by have to strap it to my phone. this onkyo seems to do it all at a reasonable price, hopefully the sabre implementation is solid.

The other dap that looks nice is the dx80 but it doesn't have wifi or Bluetooth.

There is the fiio x7 also.. Hmm

Hmm, well, the QP1r people never got back to me after a polite follow-up.

Todd Green from TTVJ hasn't responded to emails about my Apex Glacier, either.

Anyway, just to confirm, the QP1r is actually out, right?

Yes, the QP1R is out and just wanted to follow up with you regarding not being able to get Questyle to respond. When I get home tonight I will PM you with Bruce's contact information. They are really busy but really no excuse for not getting back to you.

Lotoo PAW 5000 all the way. At $300 it's the best DAP I've heard, I'd put it against the AK Jr.

Blackfin 514 DSP chip, 5 band PMEQ, internals by Nagra (though they won't come out and say it).

Anyone have experience with it? They just got US distribution a couple months ago.
