Well, Fostex have the TH-610 coming soon (I've heard around May/June) with a detachable cable, maybe Massdrop will collaborate with Fostex to make a version of that...

I'm about to pull the triggers on these, but I don't know... 4 months is a long time.
I've sold my ZMF Blackwood's 3 days after I got them because I didn't like them.
Now I'm stuck with the DT990's, and I want to get something around $500
Thinking about AD2000X's, HD650's, SRH1540, or perhaps the purple heart TH-X00's
I'm not looking for something specific - be it open or close - I just want to get whatever sounds good with Metal.

I would (and did) buy a used mahogany TH-X00. That way you don't have to wait, and you can easily sell them if you don't like them.

@purrin What input (in Hz) do you use to measure your distortion readings?

The distortion plots are not based on a single frequency but rather from 20Hz to 20kHz. Second, third, and forth harmonics are measured, denoted by D2, D3, and D4 in different colored lines below the FR. The distortion figures in the FR graph on the page page are in db relative to the FR. They are not in percentage. I usually provide a percentage distortion graph, but I didn't do so here. You can see the original mahogany X00 thread for those. The SPL of the fundmental where the distortion is measured is reflected in the graph where 0db relative at the top represents 100db SPL.

I purchased the Mahogany -X00s, and while good, competent-sounding headphones, they didn't do it for me and I decided to keep my PM-3s. The Fostex(s) sounded just a tad artificial to me in comparison. I couldn't really put my finger on it. I do think they should replace those pads, though: the irregular shape feels a little off.

I know the Purple is a bit tamer/darker in the upper-mids but a little more emphasized in the highs right?

So would the loud cymbal that starts at 2:05 in the video linked below be considered upper-mid or high?

I'm wondering if that cymbal would be darker or brighter on the Purples vs the Mahogany depending on what frequency it falls under since cymbals can cover a broad range.

The TH-X00 are very good with Metal music.

I understand that. My english is not that good. This site has it done using a 500Hz sine wave input: http://www.headphone.com/pages/build-a-graph

I did a little fooling around with foobar and I think I'm most sensitive to Highs around 14k frequency (shimmer of cymbals) over any other frequency so I think the Mahogany would work better for me over the Purpleheart. Obviously I could be wrong but that's just from my own EQ testing and then comparing that to what the graphs show and Will's description of Mahogany falling off at 14k where the Purpleheart maintains presence.

Still absolutely love my TH-X00 they are really a blast to listen to.

I wonder if the PH sound can be achieved by lining the inside of the Mahogany THX00 with something like the Creatology foam used for the Anax 2.0 mod.

I switched my order status to the purpleheart's as well. I wonder, if Will will release a detachable cable version of the purpleheart X00, and allow us to switch over from drop again. Ow and hey Will, if you will release a DC version, please oh please do not use the same connectors like the ones on the TH-610. Those are the ugliest connectors I have probably layed eyes upon.

@Will: Can we have a detachable penis on the next X00 drop? You almost sold me on the chocolate / purple tinted wood. But a detachable penis would have totally made me go for it.

P.S. Maybe you can sell the detachable penis as an accessory?

Hmm, the Purpleheart-on edition would be a shoo-in for a Golden Schlong Award.

I hope some will hate the Purpleheart and sell it back to me. I won't be in the US until late August for first year of college. Not much experience with buying used stuff.
