Built this today. More to come as I play with PEQ.

Kinda looks like a Zu Cube! Fostex from Madisound? Which model?

Wasn't aware of that speaker. Hopefully they ship it with a set of instructions for strategic PEQ, because it needs it :)

I was going to put a 8" woofer in this thing but i got impatient.

v1 EQ settings. Measured on-axis 6" from driver.

Pretty good but it needs a bit of correction. I hear a lot more midbass than these measurements indicate but that's because I'm using some rear boundary to augment when I'm actually listening. The mid shout around 850Hz is the biggest help. Lower treble peaks are also cured which does wonders. I'd consider this the minimum level of work done to get this system to sound acceptable. The treble peaks past it will likely be fixed next, but I need to make sure these settings are dialed in. Best to go step by step when making PEQ decisions.

Have added a sub. Signal chain as shown. Tuning things in by ear. Will measure in a bit.

It looks like the fe166en but if it's 8 inches then it's the fe206en.

Fostex FE166En. Except I have the super special 1337 purr1n phase plug mod (which I hear costs up to 1000 shekels in tribute and a blood sacrifice these days) which improve the sound audibly and measurably.

I will finish up my EQ expedition and give my final thoughts on these. I might try to put these on a loaner tour but shipping might be a PITA. I might just sell them to whoever wants to pay shipping.

I might be interested in these. Have a desktop amp that should match well.

New to speakers - what is PEQ? Parametric EQ as in EQ in Jriver?

Also, how did you tune this guys, by ear or with a mic?

Yeah, Jriver's PEQ is pretty damn good. Start with those settings as a baseline and move from there. You can go by ear and a known reference. Measurement mic is very useful as well.

Bought these from OJ to try out as a desktop setup. Powering with Jonokuchi amp which has plenty of power for these super efficient speakers. Couple of first impressions:
    • Really really good space and separation of instruments. This is my first real full range speaker. Amazing how a single driver can produce such a wide stage when its only 18" from my head. These speakers certainly draw you in and caught my attention.
    • Very clear mids, all the way up through the freq bands. Tried the PEQ settings listed above and evened things out quite a bit for me. Need to spend more time playing with this.
    • I can see why you added the subwoofer sooner than later. As measurements show - zero sub bass, even 100 hz ish is area is lacking. I will have to do some research on hooking up a cheap sub or tweaking enclosure.

Yeah, you're really going to need a sub to fill things out.

I also forgot to send you the super special phase plug. I'll put that in the mail tomorrow.
