HD800 "French Mod" aka "SuperDupont Resonator"

Better tools produce better results...






in yellow : HD800S . Still better than any of my attempts thus far.
in Orange : HD800 first attempt with shure tips. My best with those tips.
In Blue : last attempt with a custom made "absorber" : similar @6khz but better @4khz and now I' ve something I can make and reproduce with easy to find material. Bass extension is not there. 6khz Ringing is more in line with the HD800S and . Small drawback with more distorsion in subbass.

I'll produce a full set of measurements later. I'm tired for now.

Actually, this is independent art. This is not an issuance of copyright, the art, instructions and process necessary to modify the headphones can be covered under a creative commons license. I don't think you understand what we're covering here, we're not copying another product, @sorrodje is creating a process to achieve a particular frequency response with the HD800 and using the other product as a benchmark in terms of measurement.

 

Actually, we're not copying Senn in fact. Senn shows a way nobody thought before : working on the center hole in front of the driver. We still don't know what they did and I won't dismantle my already sold HD800S to do some retro engineering. My Friend Hubert found an easy way to access to that hole and works with different material and "resonator/absorber". Thus far, his results and ours are somewhat similar.

What I show above is the ultimate step of the Superdupont Resonator® . Something a bit better than the tip mentionned in the first post and with which I can reproduce consistent and reproductible results. It's probably not a resonator. Maybe more a kind of absorber ? . At least not what Senn made. We all know that to call our mod a "resonator" is a bad joke ( I'm french after all) and it's no way a clone of what Senn made

@whipped : you should be ashamed for that.

- First of all , accordingly to the creative commons licence , mention of " SupeBAF HD800 Superdupont Resonator mor" is mandatory. You ignore the PM Zerodeefex wrote.
- Secondly , I measured your version of the mod (closed 14mm circle of various material including paper stickers over open cell foam) and it's NOT better than the orginal mod with the tip. So basically you created nothing and you're just appropriating the work of a community.
- I'm glad your ears are happy with the results and I'm glad your family agree with you but it does not mean anything. evaluating the efficiency of a mod needs measurements of Stock headphone vs Modded heaphone.
- Promoting a half finished attempt while we're still working to find the best ideas is plain wrong
- Push people to open their HD800 and use a half baked non measured mod is plain wrong.

Dunno if @Tyll Hertsens reads us but onr we will have something more solid, we will need him before some other people will claim they found the holy grail and pushed other peope to do wrong things.

 

@Dallawella : 2 reasons :

I have a deal for a diy amp for my he60 and the builder is more interested in the hd800s than in my hd800.

The other reason is i'm confident that we will find something to make the hd800 sounds close to a hd800s. And it's much more interesting and funny than just sit back and listen with a stock hd800s.

To be honest i was happy with my hd800 so i won't miss the hd800s that much. There's some high probability i'll purchase another hd800s later.

 

Actually, we're more than fine with people posting information about mods and derivative works AND to take credit for their variations and additional information. However, since the creative Commons license chosen is viral and attribution is required, all the have to do is three things:

1) make mention of the license so it propagates
2) provide proper attribution for the original work (link to this thread, call it by name, mention sorrodje)
3) share information freely to benefit the community

There is NOTHING WRONG with posting stuff elsewhere, hell we are opening things up for commercial use! All we want is for the license to propagate so future work can continue to be compiled and tracked.

 

To be honest , the idea is to create the best "resonator". So, useful contributions are those that induces a better measurable result that the one in the first page. Anything else is at best a side move. I myself kept silent most of what I tried.

Once we will be settled on something that seems a kind of "best effort" ,I wish we'll remove the "By Sorrodje" from the name of this mod. Since the beginning we're several to contribute and to remember only one name is unfair. That's fully a community work IMO.

 

Can we change it to "championed by Sorrodje, a Titan amongst men"?

 

Sorrodje will think to that, ask advices to gods, and give his decision to plebeians.

You'll enjoy the absorber mod then. Lifts the mids and smooths out the peak a little but leaves the airiness and sparkle I tact.

 

"SD resonator" ( in fact probably a kind of absorber) mod is definitely a midway between HD800 and HD800S . Will compile measurements and the How to of the last version ASAP.

 

I strongly prefer Absorber + SuperDupont though. The combination is awesome to me.

 

Oh my bad. I messed up things. In fact, what we call "SuperDupont Resonator" is probably more an absorber as well. and SD mod only is the midway I was talking about.

I'm waiting the SBAF absorber to see how it sounds

 

am awaiting to hear this combo myself one day soon, at least Absorber should happen first.
not expecting these mods deliver miracle-status, but my HD800 sell off may still happen if love-again at first listen doesn't grip my ears. ha!
(enjoying HE1K at home for TOTL can, and HE-400S at work for distracted listening.)
