hello friends. As a professor of medicine and pharmacology I have gathered a good amount of information that could help sbafriends and myself. There are other medical doctors in the forum that could contribute. So I decided to open this thread to discuss ways and behavior to cultivate a healthy life. I’m open to discuss specific health problems and give my advice. Please, always seek a personal medical appointment first in your city.
    My sincerely and warm welcome.

From your years of practicing, what have you noted anecdotally that is not well documented or researched, or goes against the research that you think is significant?

For example, I think high frequency of tea drinking or any hot drink with a dissolved particle may be a leading cause of periodontal disease in some susceptible people. I think it may be as significant as smoking. There is no research on this, the common belief is that tea is anti-inflammatory and beneficial.

Please tell me that coffee is safe!

As for general health advice I've observed people who have lived longest and at the same time have great health to the end are those who have taken care of their spirit.

I think like most things it is moderation, I find that with tea, particularly green and black tends to be worse especially more than two cups on average per day. Coffee drinkers seem to be less at risk but I think if they drink enough black coffee/espresso they will have the same result. The added calcium in milk tea and milk + coffee seems to also accelerate the accumulation of calculus on the teeth in some people.

The people I see living the longest, never stop. They keep learning, keep creating relationships and memories, they also keep active. Never stop.

Yes you are right. Many research seek a primary outcome and often a secondary outcome, but many colateral effect are poor studied and only appear after the population around the world uses the medication or the new behaviors like drinking a lot of tea for years. As a exemple I can quote a drug called talidomide. It was a pipeline medication for pregnant with nausea. Millions of women used as the best medicine in the era (1950). After years of use, children started to born with no legs or arms. And the medicine was banned. I really don’t trust new behavior , like drinking tea 6 time a day as a antioxidants or new big pharmaceutical drugs with hype. Hour body has all the elements to cure itself. We just have to find the strength

Anecdotally, my health is doing better since I've started limiting myself to 2 espressos a day and taking a month-long break from all caffeinated things for a month every year ...

... working a forge all day its so very easy to start drinking very, very strong iced coffee by the litre ... my teacher considers forge coffee "strong enough" when your heart skips a beat the first time it touches your lips in the morning

I do have a chronic neck pain due stress. I use duloxetina but my colleague recommends PILATEs.
Maybe I’m old but I really don’t believe that Pilates is better then my gym with a professional personal trainer. Maybe I’m being a dick? What do you think abou pilates?

    Good topic.

From an audio enthusiast point of view, the relation of tinnitus with high acidic formulations and environments is interesting. I personally had tinnitus with high doses of Vitamin C (ascorbic ACID)1.5g slow release twice a day. I documented low pH on a blood gas analysis! Might publish this at some point. It all vanished on stopping the vitamin. Poisoning with aspirin (salicylic ACID) and tinnitus, hearing loss and vertigo is well known in the literature.

Lack of sleep and stress are related to tinnitus, maybe also as a result of accumulation of acid (lactic?) in the blood.

The importance of adequate sleep to function properly and its health effects on obesity, blood pressure, blood glucose, other physiological parameters and life expectancy needs more evaluation.

My back is always sore from hiking and doing pull ups several times a week. I can get better by exercising less frequently, but then I do not burn the calories necessary for my beer, hamburgers, and cheesecake diet, and cannot slowly improve my athletic ability - I can only maintain.

Is there anything I can do to have the recovery of a 30 year old without the use of anabolic steroids?

It depends on the exercise you do in the gym.

Many of the common gym machines are good at strengthening specific muscle groups, but it's also easy to harm your joints and tendons unless you and your trainer are super careful and the trainer very good.

Pilates and other such increase the floor there, if that analogy makes sense? You can do better with a great trainer but most aren't that lucky.

Personally, my job - when I use something like the bench grinder for extended periods, or the arm that holds the tongs - puts great strain on certain back & shoulder groups that don't actually get much stronger due to being a static strain. The best thing I found for that was basic kettle bell exercises.

They have the double advantage of also being good cardio when done for half an hour with light weights like I do, as my knees are shot from fast growth and I can't run or cycle without great risk.

The more time passes the more I become a fan of whole body exercises.

Marv in this case you should do a long treatment with a good personal trainer that also has training in physiotherapy. He will identify the muscles that you use and make a training to enlarge them. In this manner you will carry on more time, with more intensity and with no pain. This is a ant job and there is no shortcut. You can also use some cetoprofene or ibuprofen 3 days after the exercise if you don’t have stomach problems.

@purr1n Sounds like the "if it fits your macros, then it's ok" method.
Honestly, sounds like you don't give your body the necessary recovery time, a good method is training less days a week and following a diet 6 days per week, with one "cheat day" where you eat everything you want (cheesecake, pizza, beers, etc).

I'm not a professional but the classic method (diet, cheat day, 3-4 days of training) gave me much better results than more training days without diet.

I just realized that I have an awesome insurance plan that pays for physiotherapy. Thanks! I should definitely take my insurance up on this and use up part of my 100 hours of accumulated sick days.

Pilates was brilliant for and old upper back issued brought about by poor posture and tension. It did wonders for me, and in my classes every other guy who turned up would sheepishly admit that their physio had made them go. The classes are heavily gender skewed, which can make for pleasant scenery.

I've also found that self myofacial release is very effective. Just using a couple of lacrosse balls. YouTube helps here.

A combination of both has resulted in me never having to see a physio or deep tissue massage therapist for upper back/neck pain again. I'd been averaging clusters of visits every 4-5 months before Pilates and myofacial release. These days the latter is all I need.

Also I'd be extremely wary of personal trainers in gyms. From what I've observed, the vast majority of them are poorly qualified and under incentive schemes that don't align with clients really learning how to work out independently. There are exceptions, but they are rare and they're typically found operating at the more specialised and expensive end of the scale.

A sore back from hiking seems unusual, and either indicative of a poorly fitting backpack or some underlying biomechanical problem. Sounds like a *good* physio would be the place to start. Not sure how good physio are in your neck of the woods, in Hong Kong it's taken me a decade to find one that I really trust. In Oz (amazing standards for sports medicine professionals) it'd be much easier.

I've been barbell training for the past five years. It's triggered all sorts of useful body adaptions- a bad knee and a weak ankle problem have both improved markedly, my weight has sorted itself out. Though in my case that means I put on a load of muscle after being a walking skeleton for most my life. Another friend the same age who has been overweight all his life has also been barbell training, and he's just gotten strong and lost his pear shape. He hasn't dropped weight, he just shifted a load of existing weight to muscle and he doesn't worry about calorie intake. Or the amount he drinks.

A word of warning to this though- I've neglected to improve flexiblility* so this eventually culminated in a lower back injury**. I've now cut down on the weight training until my flexibility improves.

    * If I try to touch my toes, I can reach just below my knees, this is terrible.

** I would add that I'd been going at this harder than typical gym goers though, as I was aiming for 2.5x bodyweight deadlifts. So combined with the above, injury was not at all surprising. I was an idiot.

Well, I don't exactly do stroll in the woods la la la hiking. It's the inclines that go on for miles. That's my wife. She has no back problems, then again she is Scottish built.
