Oh dude.. I was once reading a thread about flashlights on a forum at work and I clicked on a link that I thought said "flashlight" as I was in a flashlight thread after all.. and it turned out that it said "fleshlight." BTW.. I was working at an elementary school (though this was in the afternoon after the kids were gone). I flipped out at the time but luckily I never heard anything about it.

I believe @Tyll Hertsens uses such micro-anechoic chamber for his isolation measurements. The chamber likely provides some control in the signal level required to measure isolation. Jude makes no such measurements so I really don't know why he is using the chamber in the first place. To reduce noise from the measurements one can exploit the fact that noise is uncorrelated and average several measurements.

I also don't think Jude's measurements are more representative mainly because folks (including Tyll) have voiced that the treble issues in the MRD-Z1R are real and Jude's measurements do not seem to correlate well with this subjective finding.

Jude is indeed a pretty destructive force for the hobby precisely for the reasons you mention: He uses his data (and his site) as a marketing tool and to discredit honest reviews so he can get a sponsorship.

Maybe Jude meant that his anechoic chamber's weight and anti-vibration platform is the one helping with this THD measurements. But then why the anechoic chamber? He is not doing isolation measurements.

One indeed should not compare graphs from different setups. But Jude is comparing his plots with Tyll's and making arguments constantly about how his setup is superior to Tyll's. You seem convinced about it. This seems to insinuate that Jude's results using a different setup are superior to Tyll's and indeed different. So it is Jude who is doing the comparison of graphs from different setups. He is flatly disregarding that measurements are more valuable in a relative sense (against results from the same setup), than in an absolute sense. This shows Jude's serious lack of understanding and experience.

Oh boy. *sigh* Guttenberg. The Audiophiliac. That dude's compass is all over the place.

"Yep, they don't like us, and they hate that Jude has managed to find a way to make money" ... at your expense.

Holy butt-hurt, Batman! They don't even understand what the beef is about. They think it's about the Z1Rs, when it's simply about how this all could have been handled via email correspondence and phone calls rather than publicly posting about it on headfi.

LOL, I don't really have a problem with people making money. But there is a right way to make money and a wrong way. One of the things I've realized later in life is that it's very easy to make a lot of money by being totally pathological. You know, the kind of pathological where a toddler steals a toy from another toddler and doesn't feel anything, except you are no longer a toddler.

Heck, all of you guys know that in twenty four hours, I could instantly leverage this site to make a shit-ton of money. The consequence of such is that everyone here who has contributed would probably feel that my soul was taken over by the devil. You'd start to see missing measurements a la Atkinson, or strange reviews praising headphones with dubious measurements. Just not worth it. My dad, being a dad, always asks me if I make enough money. By that, he means like literally enough. He always reminds me if I make enough, and then some, it's enough. I make more than enough to be comfortable.

I don't believe Jude needed to do this privately at all. It's just the way he went about it. Even a simple statement "my subjective impressions and measurements differ from that of Tyll's" would have been sufficient. He didn't need to take advantage of recent events (UtopiaGate) to mention "outlier", or "not consistent" (which has certain connections in the context they were displayed on the home page), almost insist that Tyll send him his Z1R (without reciprocating), or show off pictures of his expensive schlong.

    hello,

i am old so there may be some disconnect here.

a commercial site, run by a respected, experienced headphone reviewer and measurement guru, posts a negative review of a major manufacturer's latest flagship. the reviewer's disappointment (maybe even sorrow) that this manufacturer can not seem to produce a superior product is palpable. also, before giving the bad news (that the headphones in question do not sound very good) the reviewer goes out of their way to praise the materials, design and comfort of the product.

then the Great Leader of another commercial site (masquerading as a "community") publishes a more favorable review of the same product, using their own measurements as "proof" that the former reviewer's measurements are "inconsistent."

the funny thing is that other third party measurements (employing different methodologies and hardware) line up more with the experienced reviewer's results than the Great Leader's.

the Great Leader responds that their measurement rig is so vastly superior to any other (as it is THE most costly) that all other results are bogus.

the problem is, people in this hobby are sorta the outliers. if we stay in it at all, we are pursuing the reproduction of Music, where all the hardware, stupid buying decisions and (seemingly) endless chasing of the next best thing disappears. where we can listen for hours and be transported somewhere else.

the problem with Jude is that he wants to be the EXPERT. that his opinions are gold plated and that his bank account is fatter because headphone listeners, the industry and the mainstream press all know his to be the last and definitive word.

calling out Tyll on a personal level is a disservice to all of us. Jude should be ashamed of himself. however, based on IM interactions i have had with the man, i do not think he is capable of that.

tl,dr: Jude is a dick. Hype-Fi is a blight on the hobby. the truth will out. but it will be barely noticed by anyone else, and Jude will still be able to print money at the expense of other's ignorance. some of those folks might be fortunate enough to find other forums where they will be able to learn and maybe, just maybe get to the place where its the Music that matters.

LOL, he's outraged at our outrage. It's fine. At least we can be referred to on HF as the "other community" now without the post being deleted.

It's funny that they feel we need to feel superior or better than them, etc.

Chang/SBAF has done nothing but HELP the community, while the other, has, at least for the past 5-10 years, done nothing to help it, but rather lies to it and makes all efforts to deceive it and promote the sponsor of the month.

I remember the conversations and posts from a lot of people claiming measurements should not be used, that they are dead wrong, and they can't quantify the subjective listening experience. Now, all of a sudden, measurements are good because someone bought the most expensive HATS out there without understanding the science and art behind it and deems it necessary to put down all other measurements due to their failure. Right....

But we're high and mighty....how are those Sennheiser HD 700's sounding these days? LCD's? The list can go on and on.

I can say one thing and I'll take this to my grave...some of the most stuck up and fucked up people I know are still on head-fi. The nicest and most humble people I have met have come from head-fi and are here on SBAF and head-case.

    So linking @Tyll Hertsens review:

The cans sort of resemble the MDR-R10 in shape. Didn't know that. They look like pinched tits to me, but they are black and that's always a plus. Proprietary short balanced connection which makes little sense. Huge driver (which indeed is not necessarily optimum for high audio frequencies). Seems the pinched tits could do some cool things to the sound (proly tech borrowed from the R10). But in the end they disappointed sound quality wise given the price. And indeed it seems M50s might be the way to go for way less $ according to @Tyll Hertsens.

Really great, concise, down to earth, non-BS video by @Tyll Hertsens.

LOL! Even Currawong said these are quite bass strong, not as bright as the Utopias or HD800s, BUT "you get something more like an M-shape" signature, with "a little forward mid-rage", "a little harsh in the mid-range and treble", " a little tiny bit grating", "a tiny bit on the aggressive side", "a little bit too dark", "playing with eq", and "have strong bass and they are not shy of it":

Most of what I heard from Amos actually seems to jibe well with what Tyll and others said.

Maybe Jude listened and measured the wrong headphones?

I can understand now John Grandberg's comment on the R10s over at Innerfidelity. The Z1R is described as a M-shaped warm bassy headphone. And the R10 he heard was bass heavy. Externally the two headphones do look similar.

However, the R10 I heard from @n3rdling was bass lite likely due to driver degradation. The R10 I believe was bio-cellulose. The Z1R seems like a huge magnesium driver and LCP (some sort of polymer) surround. I don't think the R10 driver was quite that large. I believe the size of the driver might play a significant part on the bass response of the driver, at the expense perhaps of the treble. Again, I don't think the R10 driver was that big. And the driver materials of the R10 might not be that durable.

Possible the Z1R might be more durable. However @Tyll Hertsens cautions that the size of the driver may cause some modes.

Just a note on this, though, and I may be wrong, but high on mass is actually not the only way to provide attenuation (I'd avoid "isolation" in this context since it never truly does go away) for energy at lower frequencies. You basically provided the other way there: the dummy head is de-coupled from the enclosure, so if the enclosure was de-coupled from the ground by high density pointy feet (you probably just need about 3 of those), then that would most likely provide the same effect without significantly increasing the mass of the entire enclosure.

But of course, this is just a note. I'm sure the engineers behind that rig know what they are doing very well, and much better than me.

I would not be so sure that the newer dummy heads are more accurate.

High frequencies are highly directional, so they will sound different depending on the different types of ear canals. In fact, I would even go so far as to argue that not having a canal at all, and using an omni-directional mic that can potentially capture all frequencies at a point right outside the ear canal, basically akin to what Marv and many others here are doing now, may in fact be more accurate (at least in some cases) than having to take into account an ear canal because there will always be the freak cases where the ear canal of the dummy head deviates too far from that of the listener.

You know, being mentored by highly experienced and knowledgeable people is not an indication of anything IMO. Each person learns and experiences things at their own pace.

I know this very well because I'm thick-headed myself. I'm just stupid. It took me years to learn how to measure and read measurements, and there are still things I still don't get. That's under the guidance of highly experienced individuals like @Marvey, @ultrabike, and @Hands.

There is no magical shortcut or free lunch ticket here.

Honestly, I have nothing against Jude, which is why I'm not joining the bandwagon that ridicules him here. But it is clear to me that Jude made a mistake, and it's very hard to defend him in this case, as you can see. When there is so much stacked against him, one really has to wonder if Jude may have to try and redeem himself somehow. Even some of those who still frequent Head-fi are starting to talk against his post already.

A simple "sorry, I wrote words that potentially cause some people to misread my intentions" would most likely suffice. But I guess the problem with this industry is that sometimes it's too hard to say "oops, I messed up!" But hey, Tyll pulled it off!
