@brencho we were using the Regen (wall wart power) that night when we had the Vali, BW, BW2, T3 lined up for the Mimbo, BTW. I'd tend to think you should stick with that. But regarding the treble hardness - that wasn't debatable in any way that evening in my opinion. Nor was the affect of the various amps on that hardness.

I tend to agree, the beauty of modembe modimbo is it's simplicity, size and price. I wouldn't want to mess with a good thing at a good price in a small package.

That's one way to look at it. But even the Modi Multibit/Bifrost Multibit benefit from a good SPDIF source, and once I heard the new Schiit MB DACs with a good USB->SPDIF source, I can't go back. (And have since moved on to getting rid of USB entirely, and can't go back...Am worried about the day I eventually dip into vinyl.)

In other words, I pick up a decent SPDIF source for all my rigs, which is just 1 rig right now, and then pretty much anything that comes in the door I just plug into that. I essentially just consider it a key part of the component chain. And also I am a crazy person.

yeah definitely, then it's easy. but with a work setup there's that decision point of... do i really f'ing need an extra box for this 200 buck dac? the answer isn't coming easy to me...

search your feelings hands, you know it to be true

    Hi,

I have had the DAC for approx 3 weeks and cannot hear any hardness at all, I am very surprised. Maybe the recordings. One of the most natural sounding DAC I have heard regardless of cost, and truly astonishing for $250. :)

And just a further note. Put it into a system with high quality speakers and give a listen. The imaging is just phenomenal!

At the moment I am using SPDIF driven by a hiFiBerry SPDIF+ modified for linear power as a Roon endpoint.

    Regards
    Bob

You already look like a crazy person spending $200 on a DAC to 99.9% of the population, let alone them knowing what you spent at home. Might as well go balls deep and show them you aren't f'ing around at work or at home! :)

I have to agree. If you already have [item] by all means use it to great success. But, I wouldn't advocate someone go buy even a wyrd for this little wonder. This is multibit for the masses: it is designed to get them hooked, and motivate them to save their pennies for at least a Gungnir Multibit.

i am also easily convinced by sinister "friends" with dreams of spdif domination but pennies spent on a work setup are pennies not spent optimizing a home setup, or ahem optimizing a vinyl chain ahem sorry what were we saying

I honestly don't know how people get anything done listening to music, or at least listening seriously/closely enough to warrant spending money on a work rig. Also I can't hear others around talking to me while listening, which happens all the time. Also it messes up my beautiful hair.

Just giving you guys shit and was only offering up one possible reason I did not hear what some of you did on this DAC. ;)

I feel dumb because I can't remember if I got the 4490frost while I had the HD600. Probably had the Modi (non Uber) and my Denon integrated.

I'm sure the HD600 would sound better with the upgraded chain now, but I simply don't seee myself ever listening to it now that I've gotten used to higher resolution cans. I sold it specifically to go higher rez. Maybe in the future when I have more money to blow and feel like owning multiple cans. ..maybe.

Pretty hard to beat the resolution of a HD600/650 once you get them hooked up to a really good rig...

Okay. But obviously HD800 is going to be better on a technical level. Like I said I'm looking to climb up, not down. HD600/650 has a specific signature that is well liked (by me too) but looking to go better technically. Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I wanted a brain dead simple work setup so I wouldn't get too involved in the music. My Gungnir Multibit + Jensen ISO-MAX box would definitely benefit from a Regen and a Mutec, but I want it to fit on my desk!

Come visit my house some day, you might be poisoned forever like I have been.

My work rig is a GOV2, sometimes with an ALO Rx Mk3-B, but often alone. Get out of here with your Gumbys!

@ColtMrFire - I guess this PM is for you. Pasting below:

Hi Sphinxvc, this is ColtMrFire, I’m PMing you from the future. I’m using WayBackMachine to send this PM. Could you post this in the Modibit thread for me? Please! I just want to intervene before it all started, before everything went wrong.

“Listen, Colt--I’m you. You’re me. I’m older you. In a few months, we do buy the HD800. DON’T do it, Colt, listen to me. Listen to Hands, he’s telling you the truth! Goddammit Colt! We didn’t know what we were getting into. I really don’t have much time left--the library is closing soon--we go through 5 different amplifiers. We have no money left, there’s no internet at the house. And nothing helps. We try caulk, we try Sriracha, we try felt, cork, toilet paper. We try real caulk. Some French guy on Craigslist says he’ll fix it, but he wouldn’t do it for money. , Colt, he wouldn’t do it for money. We were desperate, we gave him what he wanted, he gave it to us (and the HD800 too). It didn’t work. Don’t go down this road man. I had to get this message to you, I hope it’s not too late.”

Sphinxvc, I guess I could have posted this myself, but the library is closed now—do this for me. Solidarity.

The nice thing about vinyl poisoning is that it's slow absorption. 15 minutes or so at a time. Get up and flip. Hit. Get up and flip. Hit. Get up and flip. Hit. f**k this, just when I relax I have to get up. Doing somethin' else. If this is you then the effects are reversible.

Sure, on some levels, HD800 is better. HD600/650 are not far behind in many regards, IME, though won't match the staging or bass quality. On the other hand, the irregular HD800 frequency response is arguably a greater sin, though that depends on tastes, music choice, mods, etc.

Thing is, I'll bet you $20...no, $21! the HD600/650, especially modded, will be the technically greater headphones over the T90 once you get them the right DAC and amp. You'll know it when you hear it, and it sounds like to me with your latest DAC/amp experiences, you haven't heard it yet. Not sure I've found headphones that "scale" as much as the Sennheisers. I won't fault you if you ultimately prefer the HD800, though. Many do, and I can hear why. I just can't get on with it long-term.

Bought a case for my F1 for work. Currently running Wyrd/Modi MB/Magni2. Very small footprint, will post pics of setup when I get the case but it's about the same size of the other components. Kitsune HiFi has it in stock and ships from Washington. Also for me, using the wyrd (or probably any powered usb hub) brings the F-1 to Mutec 3 levels, YMWV.
