Monoprice Monolith: A new planar?

It appears that with some simple mods, the 1060 is pretty good. I worry about quality issues, and I'm waiting to see if the second batch has better quality. A 5 year warranty is useless if you have to keep sending it back.

 

These cans are pretty damn good with the two mods @cskippy referenced in this thread (aka leather free pads + toilet paper at the back). When I say they are pretty damn good it's in the sense that I am not using my LCD-3 pre fazor anymore. I like the darkish sound (@DaftBunny M1060 + mods it is a no brainer for you, really ).

@AllanMarcus also referenced in this thread : quality issues. We are talking here about crappy cable's connectors and a not very well built headband system (go back few answers before and you'll find in details what am I referring to). They certainly both can be improved in terms of robustness. Both are fixable by the way.

In the end I would sum it up this way : yes you have quality issues and you need to mod these cans, but the result is wonderful. As one would have said : JUST DO IT !

 

Glad you like the mods! They really do change the cans for the better. They're now my preferred movie cans.

 

I guess it makes sense considering what a movie brings at the front in terms of music, sound and so on... Good to know .
I still have the HD800 SDR on the side for 3D rendering though, I couldn't find better so far. We'll see .

 

Thanks @Valolilol ! I managed to order them yesterday when they were available. I think with taxes and import costs they will cost me around 450 dollars though... Still, it might be less if the Dutch customs are kind to me

I wonder if they are selling returns/refurbs because those stocks must be really low to sell out in a matter of a couple of hours.

Yeah, I also just noticed that they are back in stock. This is so weird. I have not seen anything quite like this.

 

I just ordered one, but for some reason the BRING20 20% promo code didn't work. (I added a small connector to get the total over $300). Sent them an email about it.

 

I don't think it works for the M1060, there was a 20% discount when I ordered mine but I think because they are so new, they won't offer discounts on them.

That is impressive. Monoprice seems to really be on the ball with the 1060 problems.

 

Considering the potential of these cans I wouldn't be surprise that Monoprice invest on it. I'm wondering how far we can go with the mods actually.

It's especially impressive considering that they are a big retailer, not a tiny boutique headphone maker.
2.5mm connectors... that's an interesting choice. I wonder if they're made in the same factory as the Hifimans. There seems to be more than a passing resemblance.

Did I understand correctly? You're going to model and 3D-print the HD800 frame?
