Massdrop should totally sell a modding kit add on.

Oh well. I was going to buy 10.

@Serious, here some more measurements of HD650 with distortion. Insufficient sample size to say anything. I will re-measure the HD6XX in a few weeks and see what happens

This is exactly what the hobby needs - a counterweight to the ridiculous prices being asked for some headphones out there, prices not commensurate with performance. I hope that this and Schiit's offerings pressure other manufacturers to make genuine efforts at increasing value without compromising quality control - but that's a Cheech and Chong level of hopefullness, don't you agree?

There will always be boutique brands and boutique products. I am not against this. But it's a problem when everything and anything that Jude mentions in his videos are presented as such - at least the items with hefty price tags.

I'd like to see things in personal audio be more like the smartphone market, where there has been more commoditization, where the luster of the iPhone brand has worn off. (Note: this is not an argument against the iPhone brand, or iOS). Moving towards undifferentiated price competition and away from monopolistic structures (courtesy of Jude). Only this way will people be able to buy the best stuff for the best price.

    Thanks for the measurements Marv.

If I got a pair of these I would just end up selling them or my HD650s. Same thing happened when I had both the HD600 and HD650 - they just don't sound different enough to justify owning both imo.

BUT THAT PRICE!!!!! If you don't own either the 600s or 650 you have to buy these.

There's nothing wrong with boutique gear, far from it. The thing that gets dicey is when people only blindly compare pricetags rather than using their ears.

I'm willing to bet that Wilson's chain, as per his sig, sounds a lot nicer than a lot of the chains of angry HFers with mediocre Burson SS amps and Audeze planars, at a fraction of the price. That still doesn't mean I'd be offended if someone were to offer me a free EC Balancing Act or a DNA Stratus- I'm sure we all like nice stuff.

Word. They're very insecure, they'll delete anything that even hints at the existence of SBAF and give you a warning for violating their unwritten rule.

The 6xx is a great deal for people without the 650 but I'd have liked to see an "upmarket" version that wasn't so plasticky. In black. Say $400?

I'd do dirty, dirty things for the HD650 sound in a matte black HD700 enclosure.

    Call it the... 6XXX?

Given that this IS a 650, it really won't sound different from your 650.

I feel like that's already the opinion of most people on the 700's, probably better to adopt a different naming structure ;)

I wish Massdrop would save the X/XX moniker for products that are fundamentally different than those you can get elsewhere. If they're just going to change a cable and the paint job, keep things simple and call it the HD650 Massdrop Edition.

Maybe he's on mobile and it is by accident? It's happened before and really doesn't make sense otherwise.

Fair enough. I shouldn't have spoken for you. That's some good old fashioned Changstar dynamic right there.
