thanks. it's an Ortofon AS-212 converted to 12" by Alfred Bokrand in Spain. new arm tube, counterweight, bearings and bearing housing.

I think it would be disingenuous to call it DIY! I could never make a plinth this nice, it was purchased from Europe and I picked the color (RAL 6005 - moss green).

as for the lenco, when I purchased it it actually needed very little. so yeah, it took me 2 years to get a plinth, a tonearm, and put it together with a light servicing. :) my other tables were much more involved and may warrant some more detail of the process

Another Schiit Sol that escaped the factory before production was halted. It is paired with a Benz Micro Zebra L cartridge (overkill I know) and Hapa cables (also overkill I know). Green automotive masking tape wrapped around the platter for perfect speed control. I'd love a Music Hall Cruise Control but I spent all my $ on the cartridge. Custom leveling feet that I copied from a Hoffman forum post, but made them a better audiophile version by using silver dollars rather than dimes. It must sound better if you throw money at it. Isolation base is painted mdf with sorbothane orbs and a sheet of automotive sound deadening pad on the top. Setup is a work in progress as I'm always fiddling to get it better, but it sounds really damn good now.

Nice socks, too. Matching colour with the turntable.

Grease bearing Garrard 301, panzerwood platter, Jelco SME M2-12R tonearm, Ortofon SPU A95 cart. Plinth is walnut veneer over baltic birch and steel plates.

The table was in somewhat un-cared for shape from the previous owner. I had it cleaned and serviced with new parts but the speed is still fast. Im using a variac to slow it down, at some point I'll look into it more.

The panzerwood platter, while pretty, is the deadest thing I've ever heard. Much prefer this with an aftermarket aluminum & oversized platter.

Purrin's advice re. buying a legit table has been in my head for awhile ("Don't be dumb. Buy a VPI Classic on the 'Gon"). I managed a sweet deal on a VPI Classic Signature w/ Gimbled Fatboy 10" + all the fixins' and a VPI SDS and paired it with a Soundsmith Carmen MK2 and MMP3 phono stage.

    Beautiful turntable and setup!

You will not need a variac to solve the speed issue of being too fast. Buy some small strong magnets and place them on the brake disc mechanism. I will post a link shortly of the magnets I used (had the same non issue).

You will be golden. I have the same A95 SPU loaded at this moment on my 301 as well. Superb cartridge and works so well with the SME tonearm you have with the 301. Dreamy setup.

@shaizada , thanks for the tip. Neodymium magnet installed, speed now under control. Production unit of the Black Swan pre-amp is on the way in, looking forward to some extended listening time with this.

Nice. Share any reflections on either?

    I'm running a SPU Synergy G on my 401.

So... I practically tripped over this Technics SL-1800 at my local reputable storefront. Exact model of the first turntable I ever had (so, there, I've dated myself, I guess). Pure nostalgia buy over any form of "need", but there was no chance it wasn't coming home with me. Other than a paint scuff on the front (not shown), there's barely a mark on it. This thing was loved by someone.

The cartridge that came with it is an Empire 2000E/III. The stylus isn't awful, but it is worn, so I have a replacement in shipment. Had to do some reading as Empire was new to me (or new to my current memory anyway). Apparently this is a vintage "moving iron" (!?) cartridge with a bit of a cult following. I'll say this much -- I'd put it up against the Ortofon 2M Bronze in terms of sound quality.

it's been a while since I've posted a pic of my setup

    • Schiit Sol w/ Ortofon 2M Bronze, a Pro-Ject Speed Box S driving the motor, and a deerskin leather platter mat. handmade end to end pure silver RCA cables from table to preamp.
    • Bottlehead Eros 2 with several cap upgrades and a pair of custom RCA cables with 47kohm resistors in the Saga end to fix the impedance mismatch with Saga (only works when the Saga tube is active)
    • Schiit Aegir driving a pair of Tekton Lore speakers
    • See also: Bifrost 2 and Jotunheim 2, and a hidden USBridge Signature streamer

I can’t take credit for the shiny case work. It came from the manufacturer that way. It’s the Ultra 500 which is the same as the S2 Ultra plus a fancy wooden box it came in and a case made from copper that’s been coated in chrome. In fact the Ultra 500 is what led to the S2 Ultra according to their website.
