Okay, but do you know any normal people? Normal people want one-box convenience. If you're looking for step-up from a soundbar, it needs to be a step-up that's not going to involve like five different boxes and running a zillion wires. A normal person looking to step up from a soundbar is going to do a Sonos Arc + Era wireless surround setup.

So this is only for audiophile weirdos. And then for audiophile weirdos, the two biggest groups are 1) people who are into home theater stuff, and who already have a proper surround setup and don't want to downgrade to a kind of quasi Dolby Pro-Logic setup[1], and 2) stereo-centric audiophiles, who already have a fancy DAC and preamp that they don't want to sideline in favor of a low-end-to-them box that also does a bunch of signal manipulation.

I love Jason's sense of experimentation, I love that Schiit brings weird products to market. So many of the things they make trigger my "I want this" reflex even if I don't have a real use for them. But I can't find an angle on this one that makes it even remotely appealing to me for any imagined purpose at all. I wouldn't tell a normie friend to get it, and I can't find even a nichey situation in my own life where I'd want this as the solution.

[1] Especially because, like it or not, all the movie content out there these days is mastered in Dolby/DTS formats anyway. Sometimes there's a real stereo mix, where you can get uncompressed 16/44 stereo PCM (though even this will be downmixed in the studio from the surround master), but sometimes there is no 2.0 mix, and it just downmixes on your device. You will never convince me that starting with a DD+ 5.1/Atmos mix, downmixing to 2.0, and then matrixing to 5.1 is going to result in something that's not worse than just using the 5.1 mix directly. Similarly, videogames already output multichannel PCM (or sometimes Atmos); taking just two channels of that and then synthesizing the other channels instead of just using them directly has to be worse.

Well, I'm not givin' up my dedicated 7.1.4 home theater :)

Also, I love hearing that random person from on top of the bridge, but on the Titan, not the Enterprise !!

I am about to set up a dedicated small listening room. Equipment wise, I'm simply starting with what I have, then I will upgrade over time. I also plan on building room treatments to tune in the room. I'm thinking the Syn might be interesting to add some rear speakers and use them for the occasional Pink Floyd album while medicated (since that is legal now in New Mexico and I will be leaving my government job in July). Will the Syn work without a center?

    1. 99.8% of people on SBAF are not normal people.
    2. I rarely talk about SBAF with normal people.
    3. I never talk about SBAF with girls.
Now it would be interesting to compare the 5.1 output from a Netflix Atmos show using an Atmos processor to output from the Syn.

I dont think we need a new Yggdrasil, new Gungir, new whatever. I love that we are seeing them trying new products, new directions, new ideas and these actually don't stay as that...just ideas, that are eventually discarded.

Someone has to push the creativity envelope and i am glad that it's a company with products we all appreciate, that practices good prices. I hope they continue this way because we will all find something that suits us eventually, instead of always embracing the upgrade nervosa.

Mike has said he's already thrown the kitchen sink at the Yggdrasil, and that there's not much else they could do to make an appreciable improvement (without skyrocketing the price).

Also, didn't the LiM and MiL boards just come out less than a year ago? :p

Edit: Wow, it's already been like a year and a half since the flavors release. 0.0

Got my hands on it at the meet as I type. Pretty wild insane crazy thing that’s basically nothing like I’ve ever seen.

It actually works to widen or narrow the stage, and to bring vocals closer or further away.

I'd be curious to see how Netflix's spatial audio compares. They are baking it into their shows already. Head tracking with the AirPods Pro2 is pretty neat too. HRTF, Head tracking and spatial audio gets me pretty far into the surround sound simulation.

If the headphone surround is substantially better than SoundBlasterX G6, that would certainly pique my interest for gaming and late-night movies.

There has to be some hyperbole, right? No replacement for displacement. Those are klipsch's? Are the subs in the corners or behind everyone?

ZD has the right setup for it - 2.1 with RAAL on monos + Sub

How does the Syn work with Netflix's material that has spatial audio already in the stream. Sometimes there are not multiple options for the audio stream in native languages.

If I were to put together a surround system, then I would buy Syn (already have 1 ea Rekker Gjallarhorn for speakers in active systems, including Rekker in my main system with Freya, Mani and Yggdrasil) ... but I am already overloaded with gear.

Like the direction Schiit is trying. The headphone market is pretty dry and hard to grow new ideas in.
