ultrabike. Seems the stop band attenuation in the outputted 24-bit wav file is only ~100dB. I can look into it more tomorrow.

Also the h=h./sum(h) thing is only for getting the results to be relative to 0db in the frequency domain.
h=h./max(h) would get the main peak to be 1. This is only a problem if oversampling would produce clipping.

    EDIT:
Wasn't checking thread. Will inspect the added 32-bit file.

A few comments on filters in general and Mega Combo Burrito in particular. Closed form math refers to coefficient calculation. Granted, input samples are rounded after filter math, except original samples which have zeros added for 18 bit Gumbys and 20 bit Yggys. Agreed, all filters have tradeoffs. I like the way the Mega Combo Burrito sounds. Many agree with me. I only mention Parks McClellan for its ubiquity in unremarkable audio applications. Yes it is linear phase in the sense that what comes in goes out, but it enhances nothing in the time domain. The beauty of a DSP based filter is the convenience of implementing and evaluating the filters discussed above, plus many others. I have been down that road years ago. The earliest time domain algos posited by Bell Labs right before the entry of the US into WW1 (yes, 1) are very interesting in particular. Build yourself a Parks McClellan and hear the soundstage collapse into your speakers. Get out of thinking and into action and build them. This is what we were doing 30 years ago. That is probably why you haven't heard the names of my collaborators - this happened over a five year period in the 1980's. We built dozens of them back then and ended up with the unlikely freq time domain combo we have. Allow me to correct a typo. The transition band commences at .986 of nyquist in a Mega Combo Burrito.

Finally a huge underscore on the importance of time domain. We evolved to be able to locate a sound before we could make a decision to either run from or go after it. The Mega Combo Burrito filter uniquely addresses exactly this.

Hi Marv, can you update your DAC Chart of Awe for the Bifrost Multibit/redacted^2? I am very curious to see where it lands in there.

    Cheers.

Yes. That's because of quantization to 24-bits. The 32-bit file should provide about 150 dB rejection. Goes to show the importance of bit-width for these kinds of operations.

Very kool to see you around here Mike!

Regarding time optimization, I don't think anybody is underscoring it's importance. Furthermore, I don't think you can say you are time optimized, but not frequency optimized. Sure, you can constrain the optimization to preserve the original samples, but you will pay the price in the continuum of interpolated samples. Consider taking the error in frequency domain, and obtain it's energy. By Parseval's Theorem the frequency domain error energy will be equal to the time domain error energy. Obviously something is gotta give.

It's a design choice. And you can get pretty close to optimal with this choice. But a little off.

As far as soundstage, I'll make comments when I get the Bambi experience. I'm sure it will kick some butt.

Meanwhile I hope folks can try some filters with Bambi if possible. Still concerned about images if using NOS mode + JRiver w convolution. We shall see.

Earlier he said redacted^2 > Bifrost Multibit would move up a notch and to the right a notch.

I think moving the techno stuff into another thread would be a good idea too.

Good suggestion on listening to it on speakers. That will definitely be on the list of things to do.

Here is a picture of it sitting on top of the CMA 800R!

As for early impressions the only one I really have is that its the only DAC that to me sounds remarkably different than other DACs (all other DACs I owned honestly sounded very similar with only slightly different nuances here and there).

May I ask what exactly do you find that sounds different?

That's rather interesting, same here, although my experience is very limited.

BTW, slightly off topic so let's not go off the rails, but how do you like the Fulla? To me it sounded rather bright and noticeably glarey up top, as compared to some other amp/dac combos. Perhaps I am hearing the Fulla's DAC impl as different in this case as well, but it could also be the Fulla's amp impl.

I'll post my impressions after I listen a bit more but the most immediate thing is the soundstage.

As to the Fulla, I can barely listen to it because I can't get it to stop emitting static hiss in the background. And its a very prevalent static hiss so I can't really form any impressions to as how it really sounds. I can make the static hiss disappear if I wiggle the cable the right way so at first I thought the cable was broken but I switched cables and I get the same issue where if I wiggle it the right way the static hiss will disappear but than the slightest movement will induce back the static hiss.

I am curious if others can comment on the prevalence of DACS that have the kind of Soundstage that multifrost has. Is this unusual in higher end DACs, or is this what happens when you move up the food chain?

I am also curious about this "different" sound from multibit dacs that I hear about. I am currently really loving a geek pulse x infinity w/ LPS but I have to say I haven't ever heard a DAC that I would characterize as having a very dramatically different sound just sort of different levels of performance. Would I notice a very different character with a multibit DAC?

Same question here. Will I notice I different character with the multibit upgrade? Is it worth the upgrade from the Bifrost Uber?

Sylafari, eagerly waiting for your feedback!
Im looking at the Gungnir Multibit/Mjo2 or Bifrost Multibit/cma800r for my HD 800!

@baldr has called the Bifrost Multibit "Bifrost Multibit" and "Bimbo" in one post:

    http://www.head-fi.org/t/782824/sch...hes-bifrost-multibit-is-here/45#post_11963430

A few clarifications and amplifications re Bifrost Multibit DAC (Bifrost Multibit). The DAC is indeed a four year old 16 bit converter which for the glib, may not be exicting. Those with the patience to study (yes, study) the datasheet will be exited when they realize the performance meets/exceeds that of many competing 18 bit dac chips. The mega combo burrito time and frequency domain filter is also implemented in a SHARC chip identical to its bigger brothers Gungnir Multibit and Yggdrasil. This permits the perception of the spatial cues uniquely proper to the Schiit filter. The filter is identical to its bigger brothers' with just one exception: the output rate on the Bimbo is limited to 192KHz rather than 384KHz. Since the filter is cascaded, the required taps halve to 9000. The reason the unit must be returned to Schiit for upgrade is that the control microprocessor's flash memory must be reprogrammed. I am proud of its price/performance ratio as a multibit D/A converter for $600.00. I have been listening to one at my workstation for the last several months and find it quite satisfying. Enjoy!

I dunno I still like the Multifrost name for the Bifrost -I even pitched the name to Jason at Schiit, but I doubt he'll adopt it as the name for it :(
