'Tangentially, the rep confirmed what most have suspected for a while now: updates to the 600 line are very imminent

He said the Orpheus was just the beginning of more "audiophile" products in the pipe very soon.'

Found this on reddit so I'm not sure how reliable it is, but apparently its from a Sennheiser rep during an HE-1 demo. It would make sense after the $200 Massdrop HD650..

To confirm, the material used is one quarter-size disc of Arctic Cotton from the link provided? Wanted to make sure the Arctic Bamboo wasn't used or that multiple discs weren't used (as the rear foam is usually two or three discs).

Any pictures you could provide with it installed?

Ya, its a quarter size(Indian) disc of single layer Arctic Cotton. The size just needs to be enough so that it fits inside the spider on its own.

Regrettably, I forgot to take the pictures before I sent it back. Hopefully, @Koth Ganesh can provide them.

I have a forthcoming mod with measurements along the lines of this that I will post later. (I'm enjoying my semi-break right now).

The damping foam removal while resulting in more lively less dead or boring sound has the side effect of bumping up the bass a few db. From an amp with low source impedance / lower power, bass control will also be diminished. Can we say blub blub blub?

The stock HD650 has three foam discs sandwiched together very tightly. Too much damping for my preferences.

What I did was cut out the spider to apply Dynamat like material directly on the magnet. This mod in my opinion is the most important. It tightens up the sound more than applying Dynamat anywhere else. It also improves microdetail significantly.

The problem of course is once the spider is removed, there is no place to secure damping material. What I did was use double sided Dynamat like material cut into a donut and affix felt on the outer side.

    @Marvey

My findings are pretty much the same. Removal of all dampening will make the sound less midrange focused, both bass and highs are more extended but the bass is also less controlled. However - removal of the spider + foam is still essential for maximum effect from the dampening mod.

I did more or less the same as you and added back a little bit of dampening by simply cutting out small pieces of foam and sticking them in the rear driver port. They keep themselves in there with no need for adhesives. Overall the dampening is probably half compared to the original spider + foam dampening. A very nice compromise to my ears. Bass and highs are more extended but the bass is still kept reasonably tight and controlled.

I don't have my HD6xx yet so I have a question about removing the spider. Does this risk leaving the magnet less secured in the headphones? I'm not totally sure how it's all fixed together.

Nothing to worry about, the magnet is very secure even without spider.

Is it glued in there or what?

Edit: Dumb question I think - it's got to be glued.

Oh my pair, the spider hovered over the magnet and wasn't actually attached. Just attached at the plastic surround.

The spider secures the damping foam, not the magnet.

Is this new mod a superset of the old one or independent? Just curious if those of us with modded HD650s can go backwards and try this out.

Actually I think the spider also secures the magnet. The magnet is wedged into the tapered bed. It's easy to pull it out, but very unlikely to fall off w/o some help.

Hmmm.... The magnet itself isn't tapered. The magnets fit into their beds very securely though.

Dynamat all over the back of the driver will secure it just as well or better than the spider + foam, I'd guess.

Surely it will. And it will absorb any unintended vibrations around the driver. The downside is it will absorb energy that could otherwise be kept within the cup, but the losses are probably negligible anyway. Would be great too see a Sennheiser cup made out of metal or wood though.

I have a modded HD800 and recently bought a HD650. it lacks a bit details, which mods can you recommend for the HD650? Is it worth modding?

I had a nice chat with Nick N (Same guy who provided arctic cotton to @gurubhai ) and after some back and forth about the sonic benefits of Sorbothane as a viable alternative to damplifier/dynamat. I've since replaced all of the dynamat in my Hd650's and I'm really enjoying the results so far. For one, It's a lot easier to apply and handle, and bass impact seems tighter. I also have parts for a measurement rig coming soon so I'll try to get some graphs out when I have it calibrated.

Is there any guide how to reterminate the HD650 cable to 4 Pin XLR?
