Nope, definitely not cool. However, I didn't do this without some thought, but it sure seemed effective in shutting him up. (The ban was put in place several hours later). The information posted was 100% public. I didn't post any non-public personally identifiable information such as phone numbers, social security numbers, credit scores, account numbers, exact date of birth, mother's maiden name, wife's name, kids' names, photos of his family, etc. Just making a statement to him that digging up information, photos, and going "weird" can go both ways.

Seriously, I'm not going to do that. That's kind of lame. Just an empty threat.

Here's the deal. Had Felix come in here and posted about how angry and hurt he was about how he was treated, I would have listened and apologized. I think we all would have. I know we are not all saints. I know as part of our style, we will piss a few people off. In the end, Felix was just not a good fit here. We've seen this before on Changstar. Someone comes in, and he believes he has much to teach, but is then appalled and angry when people mock him. We can be a tough group sometimes.

The fact is, I feel sad about this situation. I pity the Felix. I honestly wish I had done something different or been more polite in explaining what the expectations were for a very active poster (Felix was quite active). The problem is the nature of existence. It's absolutely impossible to not be an asshole to someone, some animal, or some thing. As the great Paul Newman once said, “A man with no enemies is a man with no character.” Even today, Felix was still insisting that he had much to teach "The staff knows less about audio than my dog. Even more so, as you refuse to learn. Idiots."* without realizing that no one here particularly wanted to learn from him. This is an obvious disconnect here that cannot be resolved, so the best solution is for him to part ways from us - peacefully. And if necessary, for me to force his departure by whatever unconventional means at my disposal.

Sure I didn't need to hang Felix out to dry, but going back to his posts, he definitely bought a ticket to "Marv is going to get kinda scary on you" mode. I actually held back, otherwise I would have posted snippets of non-public personal information too.

*The ironic part of all this is that the best teachers are those who really don't want to teach and never say "you refuse to learn".

 

There was consideration for deleting this thread, but the council of elders decided against it for the following reasons:

1. Felix would cite such an action as abuse of administrative powers on part of the staff.
2. Felix's asshatery should be documented on the Internet so long as SuperBAF remains online. These kinds of records could prove beneficial for administrators of forums or other social media sites in the future should they need to deal with his behavior.
3. In the tradition of Changstar, we don't like to censor using the Currawong carpetbomb method. I like the records as intact as possible for better or worse. Whether they are good reflections of us or poor (and again, we can be downright mean at times), I want them to be out there. It's honest and who we are. No glossing over of imperfections or fake appearance of utopia here.

 

FYI, the last time Dick Mode came into effect was because of this same dude. Just saying. If there is anything I've learned, it only takes one person to screw up a forum.
