The Massdrop-Fostex TH-X00s are definitely not boring.

On the other hand, that midrange distortion in the T50RP driver (adds subjective upper midrange brightness) plus some modding to bring down the bass might tilt the overall sound brighter for much less than $400...

 

I think you misunderstood, I'm not opposed to getting any amp, I did mention though I didn't want to deal with a local stockist of Schiit somewhere in a reply.

I also thank you for your kind offer. I'm not ready to commit at this point, but should be able to save up enough disposable income in 3 months:

• September: service bass gear
• October: restock archery gear
• November: purchase amp

And if it's overseas I might get it in December in time with my birthday.

So I'm using this time to ask a lot of questions, so I gain knowledge and lessons learned from others. Other than trying the amp out myself, it's likely the next best thing.

 

Since I made that post an hour and a half ago, I did more modding to the T50RP's. I think Ive got the highs to a place I want, but I seem to have somewhat killed the bass. Ill have to work on it more.

Yeah, I already had DBV#3 modded them, but I didnt like them that much. But I just stuffed more cotton in, increased the size of the trebble reflectors, and removed the cloth sheild in my pads. Ill have to fix the bass still, but already they are better.

 

Measured as well. Yes I like that treble. Because I like grado's.
But the bass is missing. That spike at 60hrz i think is just my measurement rig being weird, I dont hear that with my ears.

 

@swath, I really admire how you are jumping into mods and measuring!

 

I quite like it. In fact, I plan to go to college for acoustical engineering.
I'm going to make a better measuring rig soon, mine isn't too good yet.

Does adding a Mutec 3+ to Gungnir Multibit & Dynalo (soon to be BW) driving HD600 & Slants make sense, or should I just save a little more and level up to second hand Yggdrasil? I know I'm only chasing a couple of % either way, but I have already come this far

 

Yeah, I like speakers better though.

I think I did something wrong with my headphones... for certain things I can only wear them for like 10 seconds before a huge amount of pressure builds up in my ear drums. No idea whats happening...
Actually, its not even when they are plugged in... im confused...

I get where you're coming from, it's tough as a newcomer to the forum to parse out the opinions that will be useful to you from the ones that won't or are just echoing hype. On the other hand, it gets tedious for regulars to constantly have to preface every recommendation post with a summary of where they're coming from. You're right to be researching well in advance of a large purchase, so I suggest that you use the time to search through threads and post histories to get a feel for what some of the more well regarded members like and dislike and identify which people share your tastes.

 

Does popping your ears (yawning) affect it?

 

Yeah. I tested with my mom, its just me thats messed up. Not sure why...

 

I missed this earlier, sorry. The Mjolnir2 is actually great with the 650, especially in that price range. I feel like it gets overlooked for a variety of reason, that I won't run on into here. It definitely bests the Valhalla 2, especially if running balanced. More authority, and better detail retrieval. Someone (@Hands?) Recently did a multi amp shoot out they included the Mjolnir2 and highlighted just how solid a performer it is. If I didn't need to sell mine earlier, I wouldn't have, and I wouldn't have been concerned about underperformance with the 650.

I will. If this weirdness is still here tomorow, Ill see whats going on. now it seems like my ears are popping even without the headphones... Maybe just weird high pressure.

EDIT: My dad reports the same symptoms. I guess its just weird high pressure

 

Can anyone recommend a good portable amp/dac under $500 for the Fostex th-X00 Purple hearts?

Currently planning on driving them out of the htc 10 but im not sure if thats sufficient enough.
