It's not a 10th Anniversary, not 100% which older model it is though..

It's still a BB PCM1704 multibit implementation(at least i think the dac-19 always used a pcm1704???), and is probably still a good deal at $399... i'd have to do a little research to tell you all the differences between a 10th anniversary and which ever older model that is...i know one thing would be the usb input module...possible the DSP chip used, definitely the DSP software version...

Based on the pics, the ACSS connectors look older than the dac-19 DSP

So maybe a dac-19 mk3 or mk4? Trying to find some info on the different models...

For Schiit, it's more about their digital filter in combination with good multibit chips. I think Modi Multibit and Bifrost Multibit are good for about 16-bits of resolution (?), but it's the filter that makes the difference.

Some people also don't like the sound of the 1704 in general. Depends on tastes.

The PCM1704 is an end of life product, and currently a bit of unobtanium. I believe one can pair it with any filter one desires, and in fact the DF1704E (companion filter) can still be purchased through Mouser for about $35 (+ is not recommended for further development possibly because soon that filter is going to magically disappear). Making it work with an Analog Devices SHARC DSP (w Burrito Combo stuff) is probably not the issue.

It seems to me that it would be foolish to build a product line on parts that are no longer supported and discontinued.

Modi Multibit is based on the Analog Devices AD5547CRUZ which is currently an active offering. It's a $15 part in quantity, but is definitively not cheap. And necessitates a custom chip to provide FIR filter functionality (Analog Devices SHARC DSP) and interface since I don't think that multi-bit AD DAC uses standard I2C.

It's about as good as one is going to get if one does not want to get caught up in a situation where one does not have parts to build product. Specially if the target is to supply more than a few hundred solutions.

So. IMO, this is not necessarily just about progress.

Things are changing even now. On a related story TI is discontinuing a shit load of current buffers that used to be the back bone of many op amp DIY audio projects. DIP-8 seems to be going away on the long run. There are very interesting new solutions from those guys (OPA1622), but it's VSOC (i.e. f'ing tiny and needs power dissipation pad, so it's the oven reflow or no go).

@ultrabike : I think you misunderstood. I wasn't suggesting anyone build a product with a PCM1704. I was wondering how the old Audio-GD DAC19 would compare to a modern DAC (e.g., the Modi Multibit) since an older DAC19 was for sale.

Fwiw I had an earlier dac19 and asked audio-gd if it was worth upgrading to the 10th anniversary version and they said no. So the two versions are probably more similar than different.

Wow, very tempting in order to bypass USB from my computer entirely. Not sure how much I'd get in terms of sonic gains, though...

This Gungnir Multibit + Mjolnir 2 + 4 NOS tubes + XLR cables just came up on an eBay alert I apparently haven't canceled. The $2k + shipping asking price isn't a good deal at all as new this is $2100 (without the tubes and cables), but make an offer is available...
