Please bare with me for a moment, I'll try to make this brief. I sold me beloved 650 about a month ago thinking that I would be buying a pre-calibrated pair of 650's from Sonarworks. That deal went bust and I was left with no 650. No problem I thought, and just ordered a new pair from Amazon. When I got them in they sounded like complete crap. Harsh, edgy and just plain weird tonally.

I hypothesized that it was because they were new drivers, new ear pads etc. So I put 150+ hours on them. Hm...they still sound like ass. I then thought maybe I have a fake pair. But alas no, the hologram on the box matches the serial number under the ear pad. So then I bought a ratty, crusty pair of used 650 earpads to help rule new pads out of the equation (thanks @Ray). Nope my 650 still sucks.

Maybe it's just me. Change in the season, allergy problems, sinus issues whatever. Not this either. All my other headphones sound exactly right as rain and just as they always have. Possibly audiophile nervosas? It's certainly possible and I wont rule that out. Could it be that the newer 650 has some sort of silent revision because too many HF'ers bitched about the veil? Maybe.

Anyway, I would like for one of the regulars here who owns a 650 (and could possibly measure them if you have the means) to let me send you my 650 for evaluation and a sanity check for me. Someone conus for this one please.

After a very short reflection, I feel this would be a waste of time. Regardless of the outcome, these don't sound right and never will. Confirmation from someone else won't change that. I'll look to return them.

Are you planning on returning them and ordering a new set? Hopefully so, and after break-in time, if they still sound like crap, maybe send that pair to a willing and experienced listener with test equipment. If there has been a running change, it would be good to know!

Ah, too bad. I'd love for you to hear my pair and see what you think.

    I've been curious as well.

I don't think mine sound like "ass" per se. In fact, since getting Gen V for the Bifrost Multibit, I've been downright enjoying them.

But, they are VERY different from my memories of them. My HE-500 are laid back in comparison which is exactly the opposite of how I've heard it in the past.

I feel this exact way about the pair of 650s I sold to @Pyruvate. :(

BTW, @Ice-man , mine don't have a serial # under the earpad. I'm interested that your pair does. I've seen reports both ways so don't really know what's up with that.
