Why? If the answer is that you just fancy the technology, then fair enough, that's good enough for me:)! But the cheapest watches I ever owned, for past decade or three, kept good enough time

I enjoy having at least one watch or clock that keeps relatively perfect reference time. I use my Suunto Ambit (which updates via GPS signals) as the set reference point whenever I set the time on another watch. I have a modest collection and let the non-quartz watches wind down in between wears.

    Regards,

This is my G-Shock, syncs periodically via radio frequency to maintain accurate time.

The story I read was that the guy who first developed the GShock tested his prototypes by tossing them out the window of a 4th floor men's bathroom window!

OK... I have three house clocks, two battery and one clockwork (I should post a pic of my cuckoo clock, even though it will never be on anybody's wrist!) and actually none of them are great time keepers. Somehow, the cuckoo-clock pendulum weight slips,, and I also suspect that temperature affects its timekeeping.

Reference? My PC checks with a time server every time it boots, and my phone checks with the phone network. I have not listened to a time signal since forever. I suppose, accurate time no longer matters to me. I don't have commuting trains to catch, and on those rare flying days, the margin of error I give to airport check-in is quite large. "It's mid afternoon," would probably do me! (In fact, I remember a Unix shell-script exercise for a time command that prints out "nearly..." and "just after..." etc :D

Your time will come. In the meantime, here are some wacky sexist ads for IWC which might be amusing:

This ad, for a pilot's watch, says: "Often found on stewardesses' bedtables"

Hey @rott, what model is that G-Shock? I like the all-analogue.

Anyone here have a Shinola watch? I'm interested because they're made in the US, but I can get other watches that are just as nice for a fraction of the price. And for similar prices, I really like the look of the Lum-Tech watches.

Shinola watches are assembled in the US, the FTC ruled that their slogan "where American is made" is a lie. They are overpriced, but anything that helps Detroit, I guess. I'm not a fan.

I was just down at the Shinola store in Tribeca last weekend. Need high prices to pay that rent for sure. Very nice place though. I like the looks of their watches even though I don't think they are terribly unique. But the prices seemed way too high for what I believe to be a very run of the mill quartz movement. Research after my visit confirmed this. I am a bit embarrassed to say that with respect to the only jewelry some of us men will wear (i.e., watches) I am not completely unwilling to pay a premium for certain looks or a name. But not really sure Shinola is established enough or aesthetically nice enough in that sense to justify the huge premium. Even though it is really assembled in USA rather than made in USA they are providing some US jobs (even though there is an ulterior motive of being able to use the slogan).

Doubt I would buy one, but I would not absolutely preclude the possibility. I have my nice IWC for work and can wear it at night for going out on weekends even with causal clothes. But I really need a casual sports watch for weekend day time and vacations (I don't travel with my IWC). Open to reasonably priced suggestions. Assume that things that are similar to Shinola line are appealing to me. Also I have a relatively small wrist so the trend towards super-mega-jumbo oversized watches don't work for me, although I also don't like really small watch faces either. Thoughts?

Thoughts? I think we need new pics of your IWC!

In that price range, first check out whatever Seiko is doing, then for a durable watch, look at victorinox (they have quartz and automatics, if you want something nice get an automatic) possibly a Sinn or Bell and Ross. You might need to go pre-owned, depending on your budget. Shinolas are like 500-2k right? at the upper end of that you can get a vintage Rolex Sub. Bob's Watches is a trusted source for Rolex especially (you pay a little more and get something authentic and it's been serviced).

Other than the Rolex, I think Victorinox is where I'd go, as Seiko divers tend to be big.

My IWC Classic Pilot chrono (42mm), daily go-to. Built like a tank and has great heft thanks to an iron-lined case. This version is based on the Valjoux 7750, predating the use of IWC's in-house movement.

Casio GW3000BB-1A. Older model. I like some of the current ones but too big for me, even by G-Shock standards.

Anyone here have experience with Jomashop? I'm considering an Oris ProPilot and they have by far the best price, but aren't an authorized retailer, so I would have to rely on their warranty and work.

Otherwise, I'm also considering a Sinn 556i. Any thoughts between the two? I really like the numeral-less face on the Sinn and the textured bezel on the Oris. The Oris would work out to be a couple hundred dollars less and has a domed crystal, which I'm a big fan of. They basically have the same movement, from what I can tell.
