Submotion Orchestra's chill, neo-noir, dubby triphop ballads just scratch a certain itch for me. Kind of a go-to when I wanna feel something pure and true.

When I saw this I immediately thought of Cinematic Orchestra so I had to hear it. Damn, now I’m off down another rabbit hole. Thanks for posting this.

You should be in for a real treat, then. They're one of those bands that has been doing what they do for a very long time, and *extremely* low-key. But they're a class act, with a lot of incredible music to uncover throughout their discography. They seem like they must be audiophiles, too. Because the production is always such a treat on nice gear. It's like they go all out in the creation itself to give you something that scales with gear lol.

They're really one of those groups who never strays too far from their core sound and aesthetic philosophy, but they justify it extremely well by prioritizing artisanship with absolute sincerity - they have increasingly become the seminal experts at their bespoke approach and sound. It's nothing superfluous and nothing spared. Minimalist at heart, but also very detail oriented. They have made some absolute stunners, otherworldly ear candy that goes straight to the heart.

I'm always excited when someone decides to check them out. I think I only know about them because I was in a phase of listening to lots of Portishead, Bonobo, Gorillaz, Zero7, Stereolab, and a bunch of other experimental rock and electronica stuff from the 90's and 2000's around 2011. Submotion Orchestra is really a late development in a part of trip hop that adds elements of dub as well as modern electronica, yet with a focus on live performance at the foundation. Sometimes I think they just came around a little too late to be appreciated, which is a bummer because their music is basically timeless.

I actually might recommend you start with Finest Hour and go from there. It's a less developed version of them, bit more spurious and raw. But the title track is what a lot of fans consider to be their definitive work. It has a lot of great stuff on it. And then, you can hear how they develop it over the years. The music is drenched in subtlety, and each pivot in sound is part of the growing story of their sound. And you know that to do all of this so low-key for so long, it's all a passion project.

I'll stop ramblin and let ya get to it. Listen in whatever order you want. All of it is slow-burn, grows the more you listen.

Today and for a few nights to help drift to sleep. This track is somewhat simple and has some of my favorite calming effects, that being horns with a nice electronic echo, along with a nice simple background drone or beat. As it progresses, it seems to get calmer as you relax, at least for me. In the end, I like it.

So I've never watched Suits, but I kept hearing the commercial and finally I had to Shazam it. Hmm, posted 13 years ago, I guess I missed it. Oh well, it's new to me. Cool video too.
