I was reading that thread, actually. It's genuinely scary to think that this is considered entry level.
Maybe I should just never upgrade my Isomac.

haha, yeah.. I think just ignore words like "entry level" and just focus on the performance details. Who cares about such labels really...

Upgraded my AeroPress system with a Lido E and a Bonavita Temp Controlled Kettle. What a HUGE difference consistent grind size and the right temperature make on the flavor profile! It's a whole new world...

Heck yeah! I have all of the gear you mentioned as well though I don't use my Aeropress. The Lido is an awesome grinder though I primarily just use mine while traveling out of convenience.

Kalita Wave (metal) and Bee House showdown!

Used the same size mug, coffee, water temp and grind.

Design: both feel like a premium product made in Japan. Bee house definitely looks more impressive if you want to be showy with a guest. The kalita handle is much easier to hold, especially when hot. The bee house feels like I'm going to drop it if I don't stablize it with my other hand. Kalita fits in more mugs with its wider base. The bee house uses number 2 or 4 filters you can buy in most grocery stores locally, kalita uses a proprierary filter. The kalita is circular and uses 3 drain holes in a triangular shape at its flat base. The bee house uses 2 holes at its base, think upside down house roof here.

    Winner: Kalita Wave

Taste: Wow. Wasn't expecting such a difference here. The Bee House is a smokey silky smooth with a big mouth feel and less acidic. The Kalita is brighter, more complex, less one note, more acidic, depth of flavor.

    Winner: Personal preference.

Tldr: Bee House is more French press (without the bullshit clean up) taste, kalita is closer to a (better) Chemex.

Maybe one day I'll be able to contribute on the audio side of the site |\/|:piratemug:

And I need to stop multitasking, it's not working out right now. Grammar fixed. Clearly one cup of coffee is not optimal when working on 6 hours of sleep.

Nice to see a coffee thread, how did I miss this one...

I'm a french press and V60 type guy.
I'll throw out a recommendation for a coffee subscription based in Sweden; https://www.beanportal.com/ .
I'd say that my favorite roaster is http://www.dropcoffee.com/ .

I like to cold brew my coffe in the fridge... even in the winter. Drink it black, sometimes carbonated with the soda stream. I'm not to pickey with the beans, as long as it's not junk like Foldgers.

A good friend of mine owns a boutique coffee import business. They source, import and then roast less than 48 hours before shipping the beans to you. The result is incredibly fresh, amazing coffee. I like to order my coffee beans from them, and then grind myself before making cuban espresso. All you need is a bell creamer and a good percolator. Delicious!

I dunno OP mentions instant coffee... and seemed to be creating a thread to see what people where drinking. I didn't realize this was a coffee snob only thread... I'm sorry " Mr. coffee thread gate keeper" :D

I'll move along then... nothing to see here.

Dark roast fan here. Don't really give a shit about where the coffee comes from, if it was shat out by monkeys, or if the pickers are paid with smallpox and tuberculosis. I just care if it tastes good without sugar (milk is acceptable) and can funnel stimulants into me which is the point of coffee. If I wanted to eat beans, I would cook some variety of rice and beans.

    Trader Joe's coffee roundup:

The Joe's blends are terrible. The dark roast is watery, cafeteria coffee garbage. Think the the supermarket house brand medium roast but for double the price. It's Miller Lite coffee. Also all the TJ coffees aren't sealed as well as name brands. Most of Trader Joe's specialties are actually worse:

The generic French roast is rather acidic but beats the Italian roast which tastes like burnt cardboard and smells like a tire fire. I would buy this again if I wanted cheap, generic French shit style coffee to eat through my stomach lining like acid.

The Sumatran one is like oilier, heavier gas station coffee rather than normal Sumatran dark roasts. Oily, dirty, muddy motor oil.

Kenyan is okay but variable. Rather acidic, almost citric, tart. Too bright like someone squirted lemon juice into coffee like a hipster IPA meant to taste like orange juice and tropical fruits for man-children, women, and former wine cooler drinkers. This coffee is for them.

Colombian Necktie Supreme. Sucks. Imagine supermarket Folgers or Maxwell House Columbian blends but more inconsistent. Think dirty 7-11 coffee from a container that is cleaned once a year.

Yeah I would say the French and generic house blends are the best. Maybe the Sumatran if you want the full gas station coffee experience at home. I haven't tried the Blue Mountain or Kona yet as paying 20 bucks for potentially stale coffee at Trader Joe's is a boneheaded move.

@DigMe and @Lenroot77 Lower quality coffee is a perfect match for cold brew. You're really wasting good coffee up to a point when you throw it at a cold brew or try to make it into an instant coffee. Occasionally when I'm talking to small coffee shop owners, they'll mention that they have "some bags of coffee laying that I don't know what to do with because it tastes like crap." My suggestion is always: "blend it into your cold brew recipe." Same goes for stale coffee. You can blend in stale coffee with your cold brew and usually have it come out fine. You can get stale notes in cold brews, but in my experience that's due to oxygen exposure during the brewing and liquor storage stages.

...when I started up an instant coffee facility a few years ago, the first coffee we turned into powder came from year old non-nitrogen flushed super sacks. While none of this was fit for consumption, and our equipment was not even close to being tuned, the coffee tasted surprisingly good. It needed a lot of work, but it didn't taste stale.

Yeah I've been super dissatisfied with anything I've tried from Trader Joe's. It's weird, because if you go on sites like /r/coffee and some other forums, people will often recommend it as a "hidden gem" of grocery store coffees. Really, I prefer dunkin donuts preground to that stuff, at least it embraces the staleness and manages to get a smooth flavor.

For ME cold brewed coffee's lower acidity is easier on my stomach and I find it to taste sweeter without adding anything.

In "dummy terms" it tastes like exactly like it smells. Again to ME it does... it seems my palette may not be as refined as some of you folk.

@Vansen - I'm all in favor of throwing all the shit coffees into cold brew because I never drink it myself.

Acidic citrus is not my preferred coffee flavor profile but this is the actual taste of that coffee bean, something you don't get with french roast where the main tasting note is carbon. If I take a drink of coffee and the main thing I notice is carbon then I want my money back. Might as well sip on some hot water with a piece of charcoal in it. It's why I hate starbucks. Most of their roasts taste strongly of it. So then they finally released the "blonde" where you could actually taste the coffee bean and it made you realize just how bad their coffee beans are.
