HD800 from Piety is a great success in turning a headphone into something it isn't. Or maybe just something I didn't think it would be. Dec 11, 2024

What does this combo sound like to you? Not something I'd pair personally

I wouldn't have either, but my main amp for them is haunted. The low gain sounds a lot more relaxed than I thought it would, but somehow most of the strengths of the amp and headphone come through well. The high gain I don't like (piety highs and HD800 highs, not the best combo). Might go into more detail in a post.

I don't usually listen to music in the car, so I'd started to forget how bad car audio can be.

I don't think rock is supposed to sound like a lawnmower accompanied by maracas. I guess that's why we bother with all this gear.

Lyr 3 must be easily underestimated. I liked it, but I didn't really "get" it before hearing Elex from it.

Not sure where it fits in the grand scheme of DACs, but Callia has impressively clear and detailed highs.

I'll admit I'm a highly opinionated person, but I personally did not like the Callia. Thought it sounded really macrodetailed ("fake" if you will) and didn't do sonic textures the way I wanted. In a way I was reminded of some Chord stuff that I also didn't like. Then again I generally don't like anything that isn't R2R so take with a grain of salt.

It's not all positives, no. Maybe too forward, too much shout/punch on some headphones. 2/64 is better with Eikon+Liquid Plat, which is an important pairing for me.

On the other hand, though, this is helping me understand better why 2/64's highs are a dealbreaker for some people.

Made the mistake of changing too many things at once. Sounds better, but now I don't know why.

(I also think that there is a psychological effect to having spent time shifting, changing and adjusting stuff. Unless we actually screwed something up, our minds reward us with "better" sound)

Hey, never mind: just enjoy :) :)
