I've attended some spine-tingling choir performances live, but have nothing in my collection. Are there any obvious must-have recordings I should consider?

There are so many works to pick from depending on your tastes.

    Renaissance:
Allegri 'Miserere' - King's College Choir (Decca).
    This great recording also has:
Palestrina: 'Stabat Mater' and 'Litanae de Beata Virgine Maria'.

    Baroque:
Handel 'Messiah' - recording by Dunedin consort (in high resolution sound).
Bach 'Mass in B minor' - conducted by Philippe Herreweghe on the Harmonia Mundi label.

    Classical era:
Mozart 'Requiem' - Sir Neville Marriner and Academy of St Martin in the fields

    Romantic:
Bruckner 'Ave Maria' - Schola cantorum

    Modern:
Stravinsky 'Symphony of Psalms' - conducted by the composer himself.

    Post-modern:
    Ligeti 'Requiem'

I have a few Monteverdi Consort of Musicke madrigal recordings that are pretty good. I don't know which are the definitive editions.

Thanks for all the recommendations - this is an area I haven't really sought out at all, so I'm happy to do some exploring.

Try Herreweghe's Collegium Vocal Gent's version of St. Matthew's Passion by Bach. Here is the complete thing. Just try not to listen to the whole.

Note: It's a rather quiet recording you may have to turn the volume up past what you're used to on your amp.

    Particularly noteworthy:

    - Erbarme dich: at 1:24:00

    - Ich Bin's (the melody here is very commonly used by other composers after Bach): at a little after 25:00

Edit: WHY won't this forum software allow me to link youtube with the start time included?? Morning literally gone.

A well rocorde Allegri - Miserere (like the A Sei Voci version) will be a real test of any speaker system. There are a few peaks that really will be a challenge to produce with low distortion, many have tried, few have succeeded.

    cheers
