I remember seeing a melatron, just the once, when it was already a collectors' item. Amazed to find out that it played *actual-tape* loops. Never knew.
The Beatles used the melotron on Strawberry Fields Forever. It’s the opening of the song and used at the end. Interesting to find out who is on the tapes used on the instrument.

Also for soft synth recreations: G Force M-Tron Pro is very very accurate to the real thing, many options, costly. Toontrack Mellotoon has a limited selection and less true to the original but close enough for a casual user and a great creative tool. Also inexpensive (if you have EZKeys).
