    Not a medical doctor, but this poor sap was evidently a former heroin user who smoked a pack a day. My hunch is that there was more going on than just the licorice. I'd be more worried about the glucose implications of eating 1--2 large bags of licorice candy every day~

    That's disgusting. How can anyone ingest that much junk on purpose.
    It's funny there's no mention of former heroin use. Organs were probably already failing.

    For what it's worth, opiates are one of the few drugs that are not harmful to internal organs. PS. I love licorice too.

    Licorice inhibits testosterone and rises blood pressure. On top of that, I got a tooth filler removed by one. Haven't touch it since.

    Licorice is known as an "active" substance in herbal medicine. It's good for coughs and stuff. It's there in a few over-the-counter cough mixtures: whether as an active ingredient or just a flavour, I don't know. Personal note: I detest licorice/anise-family flavours.
