55in Samsung Q80T, the static images look nice after keying some settings in (so this is what the 4K hype is about) but even after loads of exhaustive tweaking fast moving objects just look horrible— the motion blur and judder "fixes" just seem like various shades of blegh. ARGH.

Did you try turning off the motion interpolation?

Yup and it just looks even jerkier then. I've been going between various balances of blur and judder reduction and it fixes some scenes but then bollixes others.

Tempted to just turn everything off and leave it be, or set it to Full Auto and let Samsung take the flak. I seem to be the only one bothered by it anyway haha.

hehe, this is a downside of faster panels. Its even worse with OLEDs. The hold time for each frame is longer with less blurring between frames which is what causes that judder.

Haha, I'm just now getting into screen tech and reading up on all this, it's reminiscent of when I was just learning what PCM was. Seems to me there's no real fix when not viewing high-framerate content so i'm giving up.

I'm at least glad they didn't go with an OLED panel since among other things image retention can be horribad. I do wish they'd ask my input when buying stuff but hey so long as they're happy.

yeah, sample and hold display tech is garbage for motion resolution and lack of judder like you're talking about. Impulse display tech like CRT, plasma, or the canceled SED is where its at. But, ive gotten used to the judder on my OLED, it just isn't my favorite thing

I was about to say that this all made me oddly nostalgic for the chunky CRT we had years ago— effective resolution was kinda poopy but it seemed things just _flowed_ on-screen.

This is very likely how people get dragged into hipster niches like vinyl nowadays :P

That has a 120Hz native refresh rate. From RTINGS.com "The Q80T can remove judder from all sources. You can do so by setting Picture Clarity to 'Custom', and leaving Blur Reduction and Judder Reduction sliders at '0'."

I did see the RTINGS piece on this and tried the same but it still looks far from smooth to my eyes. Maybe it's just unrealistic expectations given what @SoupRKnowva pointed out about high refresh rate panels generally have higher hold times. Tempted to just leave it all at 0 and pretend I don't see anything amiss :))

yeah, different people use different words, RTings specifically refers to telecenic judder as judder, and sample and whole judder as stutter. one is avoidable with proper pulldown, the other is only avoidable on low frame rate sources like movies and tv shows with frame interpolation or impulse display technologies

Sony or Panasonic have the best processing but come with a premium. Nothing beats plasma for motion unfortunately.
