I like to envision will not necessarily as a force for you to control, but rather something you simply walk beside, something that in fact operates independently of your rationality. Your actual grip on it is... patchy.

Applied rationality is not a given, it is a product of mental effort. So I try to expend that effort setting the stage in my life for my will to hit its mark when I let it fly.

Basically, my mindset is that if you put enough effort into trying to understand yourself, you shouldn't need to intervene and delay gratification constantly. You will already want to wait, because you know yourself well enough to know what you want more than whatever is prodding you atm. You won't see it as waiting, because you truly understand. That's patience. A careful alignment of desire with will.

Impulse control is a huge part in puppy training, and I find myself learning a lot from it as well. You can't teach what you don't already have learnt, and dog logic is not so different from human logic.

I dunno... I am a pretty worldly person.I always want for things to be better than they are, for everyone. If everyone is happier, I am happier, because my world is actually happier.

It's hard to watch. I can't not see them as victims on some level.
