I'd rather recommend drop 58x or he400se (hfm) depending on the preference.
In that price range, I've bought a number of friends and family ATH-M50x as presents. Maybe spend what's left on something like a used Dragonfly to clean up the sound some.
I liked the audio-technica AD700.

Yes. AD900 sounded fine unamped. But the AT headband doesn't work for everyone.

The AD900 was my first serious headphone. Liked it very much. Got on well with the wings too: very comfortable. Several times, forgot I was wearing it and got brought up sharp by the cable.
