Well ultimately the goal is to move into speakers. Headphones will always have a place in my life but they will be secondary to speakers, and if I'm running the signal to good speakers then I want my DAC to be the best it can be.
I always have this internal tug of war between wanting gear for every situation and wanting something clean and minimal. The Joti with DAC would be clean and minimal, and once I get a Gungnir Multibit it will be only slightly less minimal but the quality of the DAC makes up for that.
Honestly, a Bifrost Multibit on the desk and a Mojo in the bag are probably "endgame" for me as far as DACs go. I enjoy the versatility this arrangement affords, and both units excel in their respective areas.
I have a Pono or use the cypher cable on the Sine for portable. Bifrost Multibit is great but I know I personally won't be satisfied until I have one of the big boy Schiit multibits in my rig.
Like you, my focus now is more on speakers. I think the Jotun will probably be an amazing mid-tier amp like the Valhalla 2 that will satisfy our headphone needs while allowing us to transition to a 2ch system around schiit.
Just remember, the Jotunheim's DAC isn't multibit. Maybe take a breather and wait for some real impressions to come in. But I'd be fibbing, if I didn't say I'm interested in the amp only flavor...
@ButtUglyJeff I am aware the DAC is D/S. I'd only be using it to tide me over until I can get a Gungnir Multibit in the house. I'll be at the SS today to hear it. If I don't like the DAC I can either keep the Bifrost for now or I can keep the GO2a (once I receive it) and use that as a balanced source out to the Joti.
To me the bigger downside of the included DAC isn't that it's D/S, because we know Schiit can make some good D/S products, but rather that it's USB only. Still, if it's temporary I can deal.
I don't even have a turntable, but I gotta say the phono pre for just a few $$$ more would be tempting just in case someone shoved me down that rabbit hole...
The Joti ticks so many boxes for me, it would have had to really fall flat on its face for me to pass on it. The most important thing about it to me was how well it played with the HD600 and I'm happy to report it passed that test with flying colors.
